Had a tiny order for Moss that was so small that the shipping seemed huge. The parts were essential to proceed with my project. I made a suggestion in the order comment box online and let it fly.
I got my order yesterday (scary fast shipping) and much to my surprise, the customer service folks went way, WAY over the top to accomodate my suggestion.
Needless to say, they will get the lion's share of all the business my little project will generate.
Thank you to Moss, and to those who lead me to them.

Bill,
In the future, you may want to contact Chris Roop. I've read here that he is a Moss dealer or rep. and can get you 20% discount and no sales tax. Everybody here says that he is a top-notch guy. I plan to send him an order soon.
Tom
My biggest problem with Moss and BV has been cost of shipping. It has kept me from using them as anything other than last resort.
Try Steve at NorthWest Imports. He's always been low on price and great on shipping. No excessive shipping costs, he puts it in a box, ships it UPS ground, charges the shipping and thats it. No handling costs. No $8.75 for a box full of styro peanuts. I like it.
Have fun
Thanks Tom,
My little gasket order was so small I would have felt guilty getting a discount. In fact, I had to order some jacket patches to reach the minimum allowed. But the gaskets were critical in this stage of my car's rebirth, and before I spent any more money on her. So now I also have a custom one-off Navy blue Hoodie with a Union Jack and MG badge proudly displayed on it. Right now I'm waiting for the sun to rise on Goleta so I can call and thank them ( I love that part of the state...from around Pismo up to Morro Bay. In fact I got married in El Chorro Park at the Ren. Faire...but I digress)
I assume Chris Roop drops in on this website occasionally? If not , how do I contact him?
Thanks
Update- news flash- this just in!!!!
I called to thank my Sales person Lisa at Moss and guess what? The item that appeared to be a credit on my invoice, was merely a line item charge.
In fact the only ting they did is place a poorly worded slam in response to my suggestion. She was even a bit snooty when I said I had called to thank them for superior service. So much for that attempt...
What was Chris' number again?
I've got the same complaint with the shipping and handling. I need two front turn signal lamps for a RBB. The PO put in 1157 american lamps and because the candlepower is higher they blink way too fast.
John
Wow, that Chris Roop deal seems too good to be true. Anyone go through him regularly?
There are a number of authorized Moss resellers 'out there' - Chris Roop, Tony Barnhill (The Autoist), Jeff Zorn at LBCarco.com, Ed Kaler at justbrits.com.... They all offer a discount on Moss parts. They are all also reputable folks.

I have found a couple of local garages that purchase parts from Moss and Victoria British. I just go to them when I need small parts where the shipping costs more than the parts.
I would add Brian at www.oconnorclassics.com (especially if you are in the SF Bay Area). He is helping to shepherd me through the restoration of my 69 MGB.

I do
Bill, There is also Jim Knight at British Racing Green outside of Wilmington. He also discounts off Moss price and charges actual shipping cost. His web site is BRGPARTS.com
John
There's always something to be said about buying locally.
Economy Foreign Car Parts in Chico, CA is a Moss distributer. No discount, but you don't pay for shipping and you support the local guy.
Good people that live and breath English cars.
Long way from where I live now...I used to live in SoCal but moved back to Western NY years ago.
Any "local guys" near here?

Try the yellow pages in your area for local garages that service British cars.

You should not have gotten this response from the customer service person. Contact a Craig Cody who last I knew was in charge of the call center people and customer service. He like many people there bleed 20/50 and has been very helpfull in the past for many people. He and Kelvin Dodd are very active in some of the online forums and are pretty regular folk. I believe his email is

Hello,
It is always worth it to check around to see what is available from the different suppliers.
http://bhive.tierranet.com/
I have had good luck with these folks. They have good monthly specials.
http://www.brittek.com/
These folks have some interesting kits.
http://www.aptfast.com/APT_Parts/Bseries_Parts/b_Fasteners.htm
These folks make the best fasteners for your engine. Good price vs. Moss too.
I like to spread the money around to keep the independent operators around.
Loks like this is turnig into a supplier post.
The Roadster Factory can't be beat for weekly e-mail specials.
They tend to specialize in Triumph parts. But the sales are usually great and you can be put on their e-mail list.
Last week was the MGB padded dash assembly $159.00 with 7.00 shipping!
http://www.the-roadster-factory.com/
I'd say we're still on thread, since my original post was about a supplier.
That said, you folks have all given me a great deal of information and resource, all very much appreciated! Being the new guy on the block, I have a ton of stuff to learn. As far as I'm concerned, keep those comments (and resources) coming, I need all the help I can get!
Both Moss and VB ship strictly UPS. They refuse to take a FedEx account number.
John Morrison
Also give some thought to Gordon at the Bhive: http://bhive.tierranet.com/
I second Gordon's shop as well. He doesn't have some of the bigger stuff but he ships quickly and is more than reasonable on shipping. His prices are good too.
Sometimes, if you're not in a hurry, its best to place a small order with one of the Moss dealers or distributors - I sometimes make up a larger order out of some of the smaller ones to save on shipping & then pass that savings on to you.....on small orders, I use either the US Post Office or FEDEX Ground which seems to be the least expensive way to go (especially as I have an account) though there is a break point where the post office is less expensive.
all good info, and much appreciated. I no doubt will have a growing wish list as I get further into the project. Now the problem is, there's such a large number of distrib's that are members, I don't want to slight anybody. Maybe I'll need to make a thread about "buying etiquette"!
Buy from whomever you feel comfortable working with - I sure don't get my feelings hurt....
We have a local guy here in Dayton Ohio. He stocks a lot of new and used parts and as a regular Moss sub dealer he gets the best service. Seldom does it take more than 2 days to get anything. In addition he knows where to get good rebuilds done.
It would be a good idea to see if there is a local guy near you and try to help keep him in business. In addition Our guy provides service when I think a job is too much.
His service is sort of priceless.
Larry
We used to have a great dealer here in town many years ago, Foreign Sports Cars of Jamestown that sold cars and stocked parts for anything from Alpha Romeo to 240Z. But alas, we have no one in the region that I know of that carries MG goods. Unfortunately in many ways, western NY has become the forgotten step child of the region. In fact, even our illustrious governor, Idiot Spitzer thinks we are located somewhere west of Buffalo, which would make us either very wet, or Canadian!
If anyone is aware of a local supplier in SW New York or NW Pennsylvania please let me know and I will make cetain I support them as well.
