I am cleaning up the interior of my car. I pulled the carpets out and the floorboards have a bit of rust. Can I reuse the rubber stuff that goes in the grooves on the floor boards? Do I remove it with a heatgun?

Here is the floor before the wire wheel:

And here it is after:

The metal is pretty pitted, but there was no rust through. I am going to use a product called Rust Bullet to prep the metal. Then I would like to re-use the rubber stuff, or should I use something else?

Thanks,

If you can get it up without destroying it you could reuse it, but I think that is going to be difficult. You can buy it from Moss. Also I think Kim recommends using something else. Do a search, it was discussed before.

Mine was quite loose when I pulled up the carpet. I could just lift it out with my fingers but then again much of it crumbled. As long as it is in decent shape, I don't see a problem reusing it.

Kim ended up using the McMaster-Carr stuff because the Moss stuff didn't work out. She treated the floorboards with Permatex/Duro "Extend" rust converther and spraying over that with aerosol truck bed liner.

Can anyone confirm if this is the right stuff?

I went to <http://www.mcmastercarr.com> and found part # 9709T19. Is that what I need?

Thanks Wes,

I have never used it but they advertise over on another forum that I hang out on. I was going to use POR-15 but after some discussion I decided to try the Rust Bullet stuff. I plan on following the directions to the T and will let everyone know how it works.

Joe,
Which kit did you get? the 2 pint or 6 pint? How much do you suppose you would need for 2 coats on the whole floor?

Joe, I would use POR15, it is an awesome product. It is perfect for that. whatever you decide on, you need to do something. I wish my floorboards look like that. They will rust faster than you think. Save um now.

I just used POR15 last night. I love the way it glides on, and it's tough as nails. I used a product from the auto parts store that I though would do the trick on the underside of my fenders, it changed the rust and stopped it, but it chipped off very easy. YOU CANNOT CHIP POR15. IT DOESN'T COME OFF!

I wish I n=knew more about the other products that you and others refered too, but I found something that worked and quit looking.

I also have there Clear Coat Product called Glisten PC, It's designed to coat Highly polished Aluminum and chrome to stop corrosion and figure prints etc., and supposed to be tough as nails, when I use that I'll let everyone know.

Good Luck, you are lucky to only have that surface rust.
