Following some of the wisdom from previous posts, have prepped my floorboards and will be installing the McMaster polymer mastic sound deadener. I will also be using Herculiner roll-on bedliner to really make my floorboards bulletproof.

I properly prepped the floors and sealed them with POR-15 and will use the new POR-15 Self-Etching Primer to promote adhesion between the bedliner material and the POR-15. Without the primer, the POR rep said the bedliner material would not stick well. They said it would stick fine with the primer.

I'm wondering which option to follow. Should I:

1) Put the bedliner down first and then adhere the sound deadener on top of the bedliner material. If so, will the sound deadener stick to the "pebble" surface texture of the bedliner?

2) Put the sound deadener down directly to the floorboards and then paint the bedliner on top.

3) Put the bedliner down first, then the sound deadener, and then some more bedliner on top.

Any suggestions on which option to follow?

Thanks,
Dave

sound deadner on top will work just fine, probably best.

I would put the sound deadening down first then the bedliner. I would also put at least three coats of bedliner allowing drying time between coats.

Why are you using the bedliner? Just for sound deadening? or water/rust protection?

The Por15 will stop rust and water.

I suppose you're just after a thicker look. That would sure do it.

I would do the POR15 then the Sound deadener (you're talking about the deadener kit that fits in between the raised lines in the floorboards? Similar to the one Moss Sells) Then put the bedliner on top of that. That way you have the smooth bottom to adhere the sound kit to. The bedliner just gets brushed on top of that for a smooth finish.

What I'm gonna do, since I don't like that bumpy look inside the car, (if you ever want to go back to original, you're gonna have fun taking that bedliner off, unless there's some technique that I'm not aware of) is Weld in new floorboards (almost there) Coat with POR15 (already have it) and then spray the inside tub the OEW color that I'm gonna paint the car. Then adhere the sound deadener, Then the carpet, then the seats. That's how the factory did it, sans the POR15

Or are you talking about bedliner on the bottom of the car?

Brian,

The sound deadener material is the the one that you mentioned. I'm just using a sheet material that is sold byMcMaster and has been highly recmmended by a number of people on the list.

I am not bothered by the lack or originality of having the bumpy bedliner look under the carpet. I'm going to use the bedliner for it's additional sound-deadening properties and "belt and suspenders" approach to be sure I never have to worry about rust.

good luck getting the oem paint to stick to POR15, last time I tried it on a 66 impala convertible, the paint washed away with a garden hose

Chuck,

The POR-15 rep assured me that the new POR-15 Self-Etching Primer will promote the adhesion that is needed to topcoat POR-15 with normal paint - or bedliner in my case.

Here's a link for it:

I'll let people know how well the primer works,

Regards,
Dave

I was curious how this worked? Did you go with the bedliner on top of the sound deadener or vice versa? Thank you much for your help.
