Since this question seems to come up rather frequently, I took Rick's post and made a Library article out of it:

Front Crossmember and Suspension Removal

Any comments on the procedure as listed, please let me know before I inform the world.
Or if it's a minor comment, just leave a comment on the article.

Thanks,
Skye

Here's one ---- get a couple of wire coat hangers and use them to wrap around the springs -- at least two per spring. That will keep them from going bonks -- (and under control.) Leave them wrapped and they'll fit in nice on reassembly.

good luck.

I would NOT wrap a spring with coathangers, far too much stored energy. Are coathangers rated for such a procedure?

This is exactly what I needed. This is winter my project! Thanks!

Yeah, I wouldn't mess around with coathanger wire...
There's really not much energy in the springs at full droop.

I've added a bunch of notes to the article from my own experience,
and added Lloyd's "quick drop" method as well for the more adventurous.
