I have a 1974.5 mgb that I replaced all the bushings, shocks, and went from wire wheels to rostyle wheels. (same tires) All of the wheel bearing seem good but still have periodically have steering wheel shakes. It is acts like a tire out of balance but it dont do it all of the time. Usualy around 60-65 mph. Any ideas?

i had this problem on my 75'. It was caused by ovaled out holes in the A-arms where the bolt for the bottom of the king-pin sits. I dont know if you checked that or not...

Maybe even new tires. I had an expensive set of T/A's on my Mustang that could not be balanced.

If it was tires I thought it would be always at approx the same speed. This does it some times, not all of the time.

If a tire is out of round, it will shake, but that shaking won't go away. I would guess that it is possibly a tire balance issue. That can occur at certain speeds and then go away.

Assuming that the hub is tight against the spindle?

It could still be balancing. If the shop did not balance the Rostyles using a lug-centric adapter, they could still be the problem, or a slightly out of round wheel could do it also. I had 4 brand new tires that were hub balanced and I had the problem from 60 to about 65, then it came back around 80. Had a shop balance them using the adapter and smooth as silk now. (although the tech said he had a tough time with one of the wheels and it might be slightly out of round.)

I agree with Brian. Some of those will also wobble.

Rostyles suck when it comes to being balanced. Sometimes the only thing you can do - assuming you don't want some new Super Lites from Hap ;) - is to have them road-test balanced.

Using this locator, I found a shop that was able to balance all four corners of my car. It was a bit pricey but the manager closed out the ticket as a no-sale and didn't charge me anything since he knows that these wheels are flukey. He told me to take it out and drive it around. If I was satisfied, I could come back and pay him. Two hours later I was back and paid in full.

Got an old porsche that had tire issues - kinda intermittent and newly installed/balanced. Had a shop have another go at it and voila - perfectly smooth.

I had the same issue when I had wires on them but with the same tires. Still the same effect. I will try new tires even though they have a lot of tread on them. They are old tires though. Thanks guys for your help.
