I just replaced the swivel axle/king pins purchased from MGOC on my 76B as well as the wheel bearings. I also installed a new sway bar. I aligned the front end using the moss alignment bar. I have a vibration and steering wheel shake at 70 mph. Any ideas what it could be. I've removed the wire wheels and will have them speed balanced tomorrow. Prior to the install ing the above all was well. The B failed the inspection because of a bad king pin, hence the replacement.

this sounds familiar...
1. tyres in good shape (an internal belt may be broke)
2. have the spokes tightened or torqued.....
3. have the toe set by a pro and look over his/her should if they will let you
4. were the shims properly replaced and the end float checked
5. check the tie rod ends along with bad king pins tie rod ends can also go bad
6. bolt on wires? center hub? if center hub...take a real good look at the splines, if they are bad and have cross threaded they may feel tight but are loose.
Good list, Jerry. I had a vibration that I thought was a tire/wheel problem. Turned out it was a u-joint but I balanced the wheels several times. Finally, the tire guy told his helper to show me how to use the machine so I could balance my own tires whenever I wanted. Looking over shoulders pays off.....
Thanks for you suggestions. I'm having the tires balanced today. Guess I'll know this afternoon. I have bolt on wire wheels, from Victoria British.
Generally, U-joints are pretty easy to figure out... the vibration, if you pay attention carefully, is coming from the center of the car, rather than a corner. Course, if they're worn enough to vibrate like that, they're generally worn enough to spot by wiggling the driveshaft.
Lot of good suggestions here. The fact that it kicks in around 70 makes me suspect a balance/rotating something problem. Tie rod ends, while usually a suspect on vibrations, tend to show themselves at much lower speeds than that. It may just be the wheels. Once you've ruled that out, I'd check, as Jerry suggested, all the wheel/hub fittings for tightness, and I'd check the u-joints, and I'd give the whole front end the once-over.
My u-joints were brand new but one of the clips hadn't seated properly in the yoke and came out.
But, I can balance a tire now...
Good Day:
I had the bolt on wire wheels balanced, but the vibration and shaking steering wheel at 70 mph is still there. I've looked the whole front end over, tried moving each wheel up and down and side ways. They seem fine. I'm located in Westminster, MA near Fitchburg. Any body know who I can take the B and solve this problem.
