What have ya'll found to be the easiest way to remove the spring tension on a front suspension seperated from the car?

A trolly jack placed CAREFULLY under the springpan. let it down a little at a time!

That will not work because the suspension is removed from the car. I have done it that way in the past with the suspension still on the car though

How do you remove the front suspension without "removing it from the car" Use the floorjack, save yourself a lot of trouble.

He has the whole assembly out of the car, crossmember and all. I don't know how to do it, but there was a big discussion and several methods posted a few months ago.

Marty, the whole suspension was removed in one piece to facilitate repainting the engine compartment. The suspension will be taken apart down to individual pieces to repair and replace what needs work and a complete refinish job. It will go back together in pieces because I could never lift the whole assembly into place without damaging the new paint.

When I did mine, I don't remember it being an issue!! I removed the front suspension and then took out the springs!! That was a while ago now, but I just think I unbolted everything, and I'm still here!! I don't remember getting hit!! :o) Maybe Tony has a different opinion, like it struck me in the head and maybe that explains me!! :o) Just joking Tony!!!!

Yea, I think I will just unbolt the shock and hope for the best, from the opposite side, of course

Gerry, maybe you could take a few turns of line around it so you can slack it off after the bolts are out. Or, maybe a coil spring compressor? That spring makes me nervous.

I honestly think it comes right out!! Like Wray says, tie it off first, but you won't need it!! GOOD LUCK buddy!!

Gerry, I'd go with the spring compressors as well. You can get them fairly cheaply at any autoparts store. Messing around with those springs has always scared the crap out of me. If you end up not needing them, you'll still have some for future use.

I picked up a spare made-up front crossmember and disassembled it. The first spring jumped out about 5 feet. On the second, I tied it off with some rope before loosening the bolts. If you value your shins, my advice is to tie the things down.

Stand on the crossmember and knock the pin out. The spring won't get you. Mine have all just sat there, and I only weigh 165.

Okay. I just re-read your post. I guess I have no ideas on how to disassemble it without using the weight of the car to help. I suspect John W. would be the best source of info on this one.

Good idea Chris! I'll have to try that next time.
