Washing the front tappet cover in kerosene and felt steel wool type stuff in it. It came out every time I flushed it. Found the one from the parts car and it was the same. I never knew it existed and am wondering if damage can happen as this stuff breaks up and gets in the engine?

I don't think it should be coming out. I did the same with mine and don't remember it breaking up.
If the stuff is coming out, it has probably rusted and disintegrated over time. I would be concerned, but since there is no pressure running through there (just vapors) it probably cannot get out on it's own.
I checked one of the spares that I have in the garage, and the stuff inside looks intact. I gave it a shake to see if it would wiggle around, but it held fast.
I am sure some others here will have opinions on this one, hopefully one with a fix.
Do a search, I read the restore procedure here somewhere :)
Yeah, there is steel wool like stuff in there. Kinda like a flame trap. It shouldn't be coming out, if so I wouldn't use it. I recently cleaned one I had. I took it to a machine shop and let them give it a caustic bath. It was clean as a whistle and breathed easy after that.
