I am getting ready to install the fuel pump, fuel filler and the inertial cut off switch and I am toying with the idea of setting them up this way. Tell me what you think. Should I install the filter there or the engine compartment? I thought that it might be safer to put it there just in case something bad happened and I wouldn't have fuel spraying all over my engine compartment.

I'd keep the filter in the engine room so it is readily visible. If you are concerned about a trashy fuel tank, then a separate one before the pump
Personally I'd put the fuel filter in the engine compartment. Are you going to want to go under the car to see if the filter is clogged all the time and what happens if a rock gets to kicking around under the car.
That pump manuf recommends you put one of those screw in type filters on inlet of pump.
any parts store has them 1/8pipex 5/16 hose nipple common on old fords..
other in eng compt..
The fuel filter will be a serviceable item, meaning you have to change it from time to time. I'd place it somewhere that makes that job easier, like the engine compartment. Under the car will be a challenge.

X2.
The port side of the engine is a good place for one. Mine is on the rubber part of the fuel line attached to the port side wall with a short rubber segment between the filter and the end of the steel line. The clear kind used for old VW's seem to be just the right size, common, and cheap. IMHO replace it every year or so, or if you see any contamination. At the same time, inspect the rubber fuel line.
The filter is along the port sidewall in this picture of my mostly original '72 pre-restoration
The fuel filter should be installed in the engine compartement as it is easier to service there and the glas fuel bowl is not harmed by small stones there.
The inherta switch can also be positioned in the engine compartement at the connection from the main harness to the rear harness, where it just cuts out the currant to the fuel pump all the way underneath the car.
The fuel pump can be fitted where the old SU one was positioned but add rubber mounts as ithe qube type pumps are really loud when bolted to the battery box without any isulation and install a metall can filter between your tank and the pump too.
That's a nice fuel filter. Put it in the engine bay and keep the ping pong gravel away from it.
If that's a facet pump, it comes with a connecting part for the fuel line from the tank that has a filter inside it.
That little filter will plug up easily unless you put a real filter in front of it.
