Here's an amazing Gary Update:

Apparently he made it back to Boise, Idaho, and has renewed his determination to drive the 66B to St. Louis.

Chuck talked to him this afternoon, expecting him to be arriving here in St. Louis on a plane.

But no!

Gary has determined that he lost a piston, or some such thing. (Sorry, I've had a couple beers and can't remember exactly what Chuck said he said.)

The guy in Boise has a spare block, he's ordered overnight what parts he needs, and he's busy putting it all back together. He hopes to be back on the road tomorrow and be here by Saturday.

You go, boy! If he makes it here, I'm going to have to give him a kiss and a hug for all of you.

OK, I read Steven's earlier post, and he talked to Gary, and said it was a wrist pin. Whatever that is...

I just logged on to post a query as to who had adtually last heard from him, and did he make it out of WY., fearing that he may have been lost in the posts.
Thanks Kim!
The last I saw, it dawned on me that he had no fluids.
Whoever has his cell number, please tell him to take at least a gallon of water for him, not the car.

It holds the piston to the rod. One would wonder why it failed.

Someone needs to send him the Aerosmith CD with "Back in the Saddle Again". He can press play as he pulls out of the mechanic shop. People frequently ask about songs and I think that would be appropriate.

Anxiously looking forward to more posts of his progress.

Go Man Go!!!!

PS. Who the hell has a spare MG block lying around? Has to be a specialist.

Ya gotta love it! Go Gary Go!!

This is a special part of the world.
In Mexico, I found a shop that had virtually new VW overbore pistons and cylinders laying around because he had taken the time to bag a blown Baja motor's parts. Got my bus home, and that build lasted longer than most!

Kim give him a "big kiss and hug" from me to for his determination. I really wish I was with all of you. Keep us home bound folks informed of all. Take care and have a great time,
Naomi

Someone please give him some kind of award for determination when he does get there. This is the stuff of legends.

I'll post an update later today. I'm sure either Chuck or I will be trying to talk to him soon. (It's too early now...)

From what I understand, he got the block at a place Bob Munchausen sent him to. Some guy who used to race MGs or something.

And I certainly am going to recommend him for recognition at Saturday's award banquet, whether he makes it or not.

But my money's on Gary! Go, Gary! Go, Gary! Go, Gary!

Give him a wet one for all of us!!!
Go-Gary-Go!!!

Gary said it was just part of the C-clip on the wristpin, that broke off and took out his cylinder wall.

I have never heard of this in my 49+ Years.
He said the new parts will be in at around 09:30CDT -to- 10:00CDT and he is still hopeful of making it..

Go-Gary-Go!!
While I was on the phone with him, I told him I was doing a "One-Man-Wave". Chearing-Him-On..

At a lot of the shows here, there is a hard luck award. When he makes it though, he may not think of it as "hard luck". Maybe a "Thank you God, I'm here" award would be more appropriate.

Ah-ha - this was a SERIOUS problem with early "A" and "B" series engines (with C clips to hold in the gudgeon pin) when tuned for racing - the clips would get distorted during high piston acceleration (high RPM) and jump out of their grooves. The racing boys used hard plastic (of some sort) buttons which fitted loosely at the end of the pins and held them in place without the C clips!

Could it be that Gary had this problem due to prolonged high RPM cruising? (Does he have O/D?)

This, indeed, is the stuff of legends. Gary deserves a big trophy when he gets to St Louee.

That's going to make me sleep better. Where can you get those plastic buttons?

Wonder who will get the movie rights?

Chris - I wish I knew! I'll see what I can find - I have a feeling they were "teflon" or something similar. The machine shop I use builds a lot of LBC race engines - I'll ask them!

John-

Please tell me this is a cool computer joke and I am not nuts. I clicked on your website to see what your MGB might look like. As the page loaded my CD drive popped open on my computer. I shut it and hit re-load on my tool bar, IT OPENED AGAIN! I did it 5 times with the exact same result, honest. It only happens with your page. It also opens to a blank page with no MGB! What going on?

How did you program that? Or am I nuts? Has anyone else tried it?

Jun 21, 2003 09:06:18

Sounds like the Coca Cola cup holder program. I think I have that one saved. If you e-mail me, I will try tosend it to you.
