Spray a lot of Gumout carb cleaner in there?
(Going to take a sentimental journey....)
This may not work with aluminum, but muriatic acid is a good cleaner.
A radiator shop can dip it for you for $25. Then just rinse and go.
Muriatic acid may or may not get the gunk, but it's a good surface cleaner for Al.
What about using carb cleaner? It is made for removing gas deposits and it was designed to use on aluminum alloys.
check ebay.co.uk pretty cheap new gas tanks for low prices, buy one for a hundred bucks and be done with it.

A $100 new gas tank will not be as good as an original. I doubt it would even have baffles in it.
check em out, NOS parts.
you would be amazed how cheap parts are over there, and shipping is not that expensive as you would think...
You show me a NOS OEM BMC or BL fuel tank and I'll buy one tomorrow! Even a new aftermarket of original quality and fit would be extremely inexpensive at $100.
Why do you guys all act like you know everything!!! I was trying to help another MGer, and you bash my attempt. Well I did not see your effort to help, so what is your input other than to say nay ? I doubt if you even checked to see if what I wrote is right before you threw your arms up and said impossoble. what good are you doing if you dont offer suggestions and just bash people who attempt to help. Did the original poster even say he had a baffled tank or an original??? people like you keep others from passing on helpful information.

...I've gotta add: Steve did say up-front that the question is not MG-related. I'm thinkin' the eBay suggestion was worth looking at.
Easy Erich, how did anyone bash your attempt to help? Perhaps you think I was being rash, but you are mistaken. I happen need a new tank for my '65 B. I said if you can show me where I can buy a good one for $100 that I would buy it. Well, the offer still stands because I was quite serious in my statement. If what I said upset you then my apologies but it's nothing to let yourself get upset over! Words on a computer screen are easily misinterpreted. I will try to be more careful with my wording in the future.
Also, if you read the thread yourself (before accusing others not reading it) then I don't understand how could have missed "my attempt to help" when it was only the third reply in the thread. I'm sorry if you didn't find my suggestion as helpful as yours, but I offered it nonetheless in hopes of helping Steve with his issue.
By the way, yes, I did check your eBay UK suggestion before I replied, and nowhere did I see a new, quality MGB tank for $100 which is what I thought we were talking about. It was a good suggestion and I followed it myself, but I failed to find what you were speaking of. If I knew everything then perhaps I would know what search criteria you used to find them! ;) (maybe you can help me out instead of yelling?)
Maybe when you've had more than five posts on this site you will understand its members (including myself) a bit more clearly. My suggestion, if you care, is to always give benefit of the doubt when something isn't worded the way you might put it. Without inflection of speech, it is far too easy to misunderstand someone's good intentions.
Rick, you're absolutely right that Steve said it was not for MG. I forgot that in my latest reply, my apologies to Steve and thank you for pointing it out.
