A couple of questions about tank replacement. Does anyone have any input on Vicky Brit's tanks? Their gas tank kit is complete, and very reasonably priced. I know, however, that sometimes their quality is hit and miss. Any thoughts? Other suggestions?
I also want to rustproof the top of the tank (and the underside of the boot?) before I install the tank. Any suggestions on what to use? Waxoyl sounds like it works, but is there a spray on product that works better?
Thanks in advance

Hi Craig,
The tanks for our cars are now made in North America by one of the larger gas tank manufactures. I have been told that you should be able to go to any parts store and order it.
When I replaced my tank a couple years ago I primed and painted the tank and then put a couple layers of spray undercoating on all surfaces before installing it.
Mark
I got a VB tank kit. It is aftermarket. It is steel, unpainted, uncoated. I used POR15 to coat the outside of the tank all over. Then waxoyl was put on the top of the tank to boot.
I cleaned the outside surface with a cleaner from POR, then etched it with POR's etch, coated it with 2 coats of POR15 (3 on top). POR is the way to go on the tank. Hard as rock, easy to apply (just be careful to keep it off your skin). Waxoyl/POR the underside of the trunk panel while the tank is out too. Can't be too careful.
My mechanic installed it. He said it fit perfectly. No drama. Here is a picture of the installed tank

Craig:
I just installed the VB tank just as Mark did. Went in well and quality seemed good. Some people have noted that the lower price tanks do not have an internal baffle and that the gas will slosh around. Hasn't bothered me (or rather, can't say I have noticed with everything else going on). I was not patient enough in letting the under coat dry....should have let it get hard, so I have some fingerprints immortalized on the bottom of the tank. I was a bit surprised when I took the old tank to the trash at how much heavier it is than the replacement, may only get twenty years out of the new tank.

I won't repeat what others have already said about the VB tank (good quality) but if you decide to paint it with POR 15 you need to follow Paul's procedures. The new tank is slick, and if you don't etch it the POR won't hold well.
My new tanks all came from Moss and came painted. The fit is perfect, but there is no drain like in original tanks. Some have suggested that you can have one welded in.
Paul,
Thanks for the advice - and the pics. I've heard a lot about POR-15. Is it sold in any stores, or does it have to be ordered?
Craig, I have seen them at large car shows, but I have always ordered online with no problems, they are a great company to deal with.

stuff comes very quick, Very impressed with the products and service. At least order the free (paper) catalog. I doubt it is sold at parts stores...at least I have never seen it
But the prep work is key. Needs to be sqeaky clean and etched first.

Will do! Thanks. I just hope that the fuel filter holds out while I run down this tank of gas.
