My gas and temperature gauge work then they stop working. a couple of minutes later they work again. My guess is I have a fuse going bad. Any suggestions? does any one know what fuse to check in the fuse box?

Don't remember offhand, but now might be a good time to remove them all and give them a clean (and the contacts). That might be your problem.

Sorry it's a 77 b

i believe these also share a voltage stabilizer located behind the dash.

3rd fuse down. Check your grounds and Ing. relay wires too. I had a lose one and did the same thing on my 79

I guess I will look under the dash tomorrow. I spent the weekend replacing my fuel tank and installing new header and a new weber carb. I took it for a long test drive and the gauges started going crazy but the car is runs great.

Check the third fuse down first, easier than digging under the dash. Just clean the fuse connections and see if that cures it. Good luck!

If I were you I'd just replace the fuses. On my car they were really old and fell apart when I was going to clean them..

Check your voltage stabilizer's ground. It sound like the ground is bad. The voltage stabilizer is a small rectangular box with "I think" three wires going to it. It is located on the drivers side firewall behind the dash just to the upper right of the bonnet (hood) release knob. It's only job is to regulate the voltage for the gas and temp gauge. Whenever those two gauges fail at the same time it's because of the voltage regulator and only because of the voltage regulator, nothing else. If only one gauge fails of those two then it is something else. It is grounded by it's mount to the firewall and maybe one of the wires is a ground also. Make sure the metal to metal contact is clean and shiny. The unit itself is probably okay because if it fails it's out for the count. The fact that it fails intermittently tells me that the ground is getting bad. It might be a good idea to replace it anyway or at least buy one and keep it as a spare. They aren't expensive and now you can buy more modern sold state voltage regulators which are more reliable. The old style ones are pretty archaic in their internal workings.

I just bought a 73 B and both the gas and temp. gauge haven't worked since i bought it. Is there a Voltage Stabalizer on a 73? If there is, is it in the same spot as the 77? Is there a fuse i should check on my car also.

Yes there is - and it is in, roughly, the same location - high up on the firewall, over the driver's left knee!

If ONLY the fuel and temp gauges are affected, it is almost certainly related to the stabilizer, or associated wiring. If the turn signals also quit - look to fuse #3.

Sounds like it's the stabilizer because the turn signals work fine. Thanks for the info. I had just bought a sending unit for my gas tank and it would have been very frustrating to have replaced it only to find my guage still not working.
