MGB: Good ol' Giv'em Hell Harry quotes

"The Buck Stops Here."

"It doesn't matter how big a ranch ya' own, or how many cows ya' brand, the size of your funeral is still gonna depend on the weather."
-Harry Truman.

After President Truman retired from office in 1952, he was left with an income consisting of basically a U.S.Army pension, reported to have been only $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an "allowance" and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me.
You want the office of the president, and that doesn't belong to me.
It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing,
"I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

We now see that other past presidents, have found a new level of success in cashing in on the presidency, resulting in untold wealth.
Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices.
Obviously, political offices are now for sale.

Good old Harry Truman could have been correct when he observed, "My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician.
And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference.
I, for one, believe the piano player job to be much more honorable than current politicians."

These bring to mind another little known quote from Giv'em Hell Harry.

Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld was backed to the hilt by President Bush, but his father David Rumsfeld didn't enjoy such support when he held the same job for President Truman who once said, "Hiring David Rumsfeld is the worst mistake I ever made. It's not that he's a bad man, it's just that he's such a dumb son-of-a-bitch."

I always considered President Truman to be the "reluctant president" and therefore one of the best ones this country has ever had.

Good stuff, John. Anyone who hasn't read his biography, "Truman" by David Mc (God! I can't remember the guy's name - wrote "The Path Between The Seas", "1776", "Adams", etc.) need to. Truman will always be my hero.

I read his biography, interesting guy. I like how he said that nothing new ever really happens, if you study history, it's all happened before....

Thank you, John, for those quotes and comments. They measure the distance between what we have had since and the likes of a Harry S. Truman.

I still remember the newsreels of Harry taking his daily constitutional (walk) wearing his white hat. This country was blessed to have him as President. I think the country is damned, now.

My wife got a Hallmark birthday card the other day that had a Truman quote on it.

"Never kick a fresh turd on a hot day"

I read his biography and learned a great deal I did not know and did not understand. It shows what happens in a legacy when looked at through the looking glass of time. He established a pretty effective doctrine on how to deal with foreign policy for several decades.

Harry S Truman could not get picked for VP on any national ticket today. His connections to the KC political machine (Pendergast) would draw so much heat that a presidential candidate couldn't survive the storm.

"It's amazing what can get done when no one cares about who gets the credit."

I think it was Mark Twain who said that Common Sense ain't so common. I would guess that Harry Truman was the exception that proved Twain's point.

George Bernard Shaw said something like:
"Common sense is such a rare attribute so to be considered genius when encountered."

President Truman to Bess: "I'm going to shovel some manure on the flowers."
A guest commented to Mrs. Truman "The President should use the term 'fertilizer' instead of 'manure.'"
Bess reportedly said "'Manure' is better than what he usually says."

He was a great leader at a critical time in this country's history. We need another one, but there ain't one in sight.
