...and now they have it correct after I went in with the documents and books...on the plus side I said it was a roadster not a "2 door" as they put on my other MG titles, and would they please correct that error...surprise..they did and it now reads Roadster as it should. How many of you have that on your titles??

Its still a 2 door.
As long as the VIN is correct and the MG model is on the title I dont worry too much about the rest.
Ron
My MGA and my MGB both are titled as MG. No model is used in NC. Just make and a 2 letter body code.
Gary.....thats all they would let me put too just MG....Ron,just fer that I'm tellin OSHA about yer saw horses...
Wyatt
Aw shucks, but they are DHEC approved sawhorses. Probably did not dispose of the saw dust in the correct manner when I made them.:I3:
Went to SC DMV yesterday with a NC title for my MGB I just bought and they would not let me use the mileage on the car because the NC title had no mileage typed in, and no place for it on the front of the title. I just told her it exceeds the mech limits, then she said OK I will give you a SC title and reg for the car. After a 2 hour wait I was not leaving without a title. I dont know about other states but in SC you have to have the mileage on the front of the title, in print. She had no clue what a MG was so I had to enlighten her, she did put down that it was a MGBGT for the model.
I guess every state has its quirks on what they want on a title. In SC you have to pay 5% sales tax on a used car purchase up to a limit of $300.00. Then you have to pay property tax on any car you register, new cars will take a chunk out of your ass. That has to be done before you even go to DMV so you can show them the receipt for taxes paid, and that is every year.
All I wanted was a title with the VIN and did not care that the odometer reading in excess of its limits. I have lots of other SC titles with low orig mileage cars.

My Karmann Ghia cabrio is titled as- Make: Convta, Model: Convtb, Year: 1969 (it's a 1971)
My VW Bus was titled as- Make Windva model: Other, Year: 1968 (it's a 1971) When I junked the bus I sold the VIN tags/title to a guy with a Kit Car that wouldn't fly through the DMV
My other Karmann Ghia was titled as- Make: Kargi, Model: Kargi, they got the year correct at 1969. That pan went under a dune buggy body, probably one manufactured by Kargi.
Volkswagen is nowhere to be seen . . .
Wyatt, anytime I go to the DMV to get something straightened out and I leave there without it first getting much, much worse and requiring a second trip , I consider it a HUGE success. Glad it went well for you!
...well Henry, it was a two trip process, but I got a person willing to listen and learn and help on my second trip.It all seems so logical,to bad it is the exception not the norm. The irony here is it was they who made the original mistake on the title to begin with..
The first TD I bought I pulled out of the woods in WVA. The owner had purchased it from a sheriffs auction of abandoned vehicles. Back then the title had the engine number as part of the registration and this one was wrong. It had the engine a Stag xxxxx instead of XPAG xxxxx. I tried to get PA to straighten it out to no avail. They said I would have to got back to WVA.
I worked for the air lines so flying was cheap and I flew down to Charleston and went to the DMV and they said I had to get the JP that conducted the sale to change it. I went to the JPs house to talk about it and his wife came to the door. She said she recorded the sale and she never makes mistakes and was not going to change it. About that time her poodle came out the door and I praised her for having such a pretty dog and we began a conversation on loving dogs and getting them ice cream. Her last words were " You go down to the DMV and they will have a new title for you..... Dog Power
My 3 roadster titles say RD. My coupe title says CV, but the previous title on the coupe said ROADSTER
The MK11 old title said Rdster
The 1600 old title said Roadster
The 58 roadster had no prior title. I had to do a bond title.
I always photo copy the old titles before I get a new one.
That gives me history on the MK11 back to 8 18 66.
7 18 79 on the 1960 1600 and 1 19 79 on the coupe.
I think it only matters to us as long as the year and VIN# are right.
You never know when you go to the SC DMV. It took a year of trying before I finally got the title to the Magnette, when the lady filled it in she put in the wrong year. I asked her to correct it, she wouldn't and said I had to apply for a new title. I will, someday.
Went in last time with the papers for 2 different cars. It could have been a mess, the papers were from an estate sale but the original titles, from the PO's PO, were in the folders. The guy looked at the estate sale papers and gave them back to me. He went ahead and used the titles, which had not been signed over to the PO (smart move), had me sign them and gave me the registrations and tags for both cars.
I was told I'd have to bring the cars by the DMV to check the VINs before they would send the titles. A couple of weeks later the titles came in the mail.
It was the best experience I've ever had at the DMV, almost makes up for all the rest of them.
I bought my MGA in August '77, titled it in Jul '78. For VIN it has the 5-digit chassis number, no prefix. Year="1958" (manufactured in Aug '57, probably first sold in '58). Make and Model (one box) is "MG A". Body stye is "CONV". I recognize my own hand writing on the title application, so can't blame it on anyone else. I was probably copying it exactly from the prior title. I'm sure I had to show the title when applying for license plates in 1986, but same state so no problem there. Otherwise I haven't had any problem with it in 34 years, considering the title has only been out of the envelope about three times (including today).
In 1977 Illinois didn't have sales tax on a used car private sale, but did tax a dealer sale. I think the logic was that a dealer took a used car on trade for a new one and discounted the price of the new one for calculating sales tax, so they had to tax the used car when re-sold to account for the missing tax on the new one. In the mid 90's I bought a cheap used stock car (NASCAR type). When I registered the title (no license plates for off-road use only) I was billed $25 for minimal sales tax n the used car private purchase. I thought I bought it from my brother, but the title had my nephew's name on it. Brother would have been exempt from sales tax, being an immediate family member, but no exemption for nephew. I haven't bought any car non-dealer since then, so no idea what the tax policy on a used car is in Illinois by now.
My 1958 MGA is titled off the engine number which was a common practice in the past. My experience with DMVs is that they are quite rigid and unbending. With that said, when one encounters the right individual things can move very quickly. I had been trying to title a 1969 Triumph 650 Bonneville mc for almost a year when a DMV inspector got involved and within a week I had a title. The hangup in DMV was a rebuilt vehicle versus an original. A matching number frame and engine is a legal mc in VA.
Each state is different which compounds the problem. A number of NE states don't title older vehicles. I guess one needs to be persistent.
... I guess every state has its quirks on what they want on a title. In SC you have to pay 5% sales tax on a used car purchase up to a limit of $300.00. All part of the government trend to "lower" real estate and income taxes so that politicians can take the credit and get the votes. Only trouble is they are adding specialty taxes like this and and fees out yer ying-yang. I saw an article in yesterdays news up here that some states (SC included) are going to attempt to add toll sections to I-95. What you want to bet they'll be right at the state lines where they gig the interstate travellers commuting between the northern states and Florida? BTW, my real estate tax on my house went down about 40% with the "tax reform" we had several years ago. Last year it went back up 15%. Thank you, Greenville County. I'm sure y'all had a similar experience. I'm surprised my property tax on my MGB hasn't been jacked up yet as a "classic" like they did on my MGA some years ago and quadrupled my prop tax on it from one year to the next.
In our state we passed a law called TABOR (TAxpayer Bill Of Rights) Tabor includes a formula where taxes can only go up by a factor of inflation and population. To increase taxes in any other way requires a vote by those being taxed.
There are 2 ways the politicians have worked to get around the law. They remove funding from things that are popular like roads and schools and then ask the population to vote to "save the childeren" or "fight gridlock on our higheays"
The other way is even more decietful. They convinced the judges that they appointed to make a distinction between Taxes and Fees. They are now free to increase "Fees" without voter aproval. Car registration fees have gone out of sight.
...the state of michigan has now changed their policy of obtaining a lost or non titled used car title....I went in today to do another of my cars, and I was prepared with the correct documents obtained from the "dealer"...after a wait I was informed that I needed more paper work. I explained that I had just done this appx 3 weeks ago, so what gives?? They informed me that they had just implemented a new policy at about the same time. As with all new policies of gov't they were a little unsure as what to do, so they had an impromtu conference. I was then told to get an appraisal and show the NADA value...Haa, I was applying for a 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta spider title to a car I have had since 1989, they had no idea what an Alfa was, they just spout stuff as it occurs to them I think.....Loooong story short, two trips to the dealer and three trips to the Sec of State...I was told there would be a wait of appx 2/3 hours as the vin numbers were checked thru two different agencies...The irony is that this particular alfa was at the time considered a parts car,and it came with two other alfas I bought from the same guy. At that time I had already paid taxes on the car because when the seller wrote the bill of sale back then he lumped all the cars into one sales price, so I paid tax on it when I titled the other two cars long ago.So today I paid tax on it again....and at a higher rate.I need say no more...these are the brains behind our nations greatness.
