Hello All!
I decided to go ahead and replace my rotors and brake pads while I'm waiting for the cylinder head to get back from the machine shop (thanks again, Dave)
Two questions. How do you get the inner grease seal out? The brake kit came with a new one, and I figured I might as well replace it. I don't want to screw something up by prying on it too hard.
Secondly, what kind of grease do you all use for the wheel bearings and how much do you pack in there?
Thanks,
Trent

It's got to come out to get the bearing and spacer out. I usually take a small screwdriver, drive it inot the seal and start prying. Auto parts places also have a special seal removal tool that looks like flat bar with two funny looking hooks on it. With this you just hook it under the seal and pry it out. Just be real carefull installing the new seal. Sometimes the opening in the new rotor is a bit undersized or the seal is a bit oversized and the seal wants to be a PITA to get in straight. Good luck
Seems to me when I did this job last year I used one of my wifes dental tools. A sharp pointy small tool of some sort they use to pick at your bad teeth with. It helps if you can get one that has a curved end to it and just stick the pointy end in to spear the seal and lift it out.
As far as wheel bearing greese, I use plain old Castrol wheel bearing greese. Can be had at just about any auto store.
And as far as packing wheel bearings, just put a whole bunch of greese in the palm of your hand, take a cleaned bearing and just continuosly press the bearing down into your hand forcing the greese into the bearing. Do this until the bearing is completely filled and overflowing with greese, or until you can't take the boredom any more.
when i took the collars out a few weeks ago, i used a small screwdriver to get 'em out. to push the new ones in, i used a 1" 1/8 socket, or there abouts. i'd then hit it from diff angles, etc. it helped apply pressure to the new ring without scratching, scarring, etc. worked like a charm.
Packing the bearings in the palm of your hand is the old fashioned way. The new way is to use the gizmo with two cones and a grease fitting. You place the race between the two cones and use the grease gun to pump the grease into the bearing. You can keep your hands nice and clean-until you have to pick up the bearing and install it or clean up the gizmo. Sometimes the old ways are just the best!
You can't damage anything but the seal you're replacing anyway no matter how you get it out. Just stick a big swrewdriver through and under one side and wop it out. For wheel bearing packing and inspection, check here: <http://www.theautoist.com/wheel_bearing_maintenance.htm>
