Hi All, I was out greasing my MGB and TR4 and ran into trouble. I have a good grease gun, but it will not force the grease through the zerk. The gease comes out around the zerk and not into the part being greased. What's wrong? Or what am I doing wrong? Thanks, Mike

Old, hardened grease behind the Zerk? How long since it was last greased? You could try putting a bit of heat to the part to try and soften it. Don't melt any bushings though.

I bet your grease nipple nozzle on the gun is woren out. If you buy a new one take a zerk with you and try it in the new nozzle some of them are crap and you won't be able to pull it off the zerk. Don't forget to get a thinner walled one so you can get onto the zerk on the U Joint.

Hi,
Do you mean it comes out between the zerk and gun fitting?--push and hold tight and straight on the zerk. If that doesnt work (as Derek said) remove and clean old grease.
Do you mean it goes thru the zerk and comes out at the zerk threads?--tighten zerk, if that doesnt work, remove zerk and with a metal pick (NOT a Toothpick, it might break off) pull out any dirt/hard grease right at the fitting.
good luck,
rob

The hardened grease might be beyond the reach of a pick, but it's worth a try. It might also be hardened further into the component.

I've replaced the zerks themselves from time to time.

Thanks all, It's an almost new fitting on the gun, I greased the TR4 about 9 months ago, so the grease shouldn't be hard yet. The grease isn't getting into the zerk, and the gun fitting seems really loose on the zerks. Could hold the fitting on the zerk, but as uncoordinated as I am, it's darn near impossible to work the lever. I have a flexable hose.

Thanks, Mike

Some new grease guns particularly the ones made, um, overseas are just plain no good. I'm looking for a better one. I have the same problem with a new front end and clean zerks.
Can anyone tell me where to find the narrow body fitting for the driveshaft u joint?

There used to be a hammer driven tool for cleaning grease fittings. You stick it on the fitting and hit it with a hammer and the pressure build up unplugs the fitting. Never had it fail. The one I had just failed to come home after loaning it out one day.

Dan..I'd like to find one also, tired of pumping that little mini thing of mine (the ones with the small point that allways seems to have an air lock)

Mike my old nozzle was doing the same as yours, when I bought a new one it worked great. I should say when i bought the second new one. The first one actually broke the end of the zerk off.

Yeah. So then you unscrew the thing to get rid of the airlock and the grease blows out all over the place. I'm throwing that one away.

Does anyone know where to get a gease gun nozzle to fit the zerk on the universal joint?

Mine works on the u-joints, but they have the extended fittings for easy access. I found that sometimes the little valve on the end of the zerk gets stuck, try pushing a paper-clip into the end of the zerk to free it up. Good luck.

I can't even get it on the zerk not enough room.

I use a small gun with a pinpoint fitting for my U-joints. Originally bought it to grease the ratchet mechanism on a Snap-on air ratchet, but it's come in handy for lots of other stuff as well.

I've run into the hardened grease problem too but when I'm working on the suspension, I like to have the car jacked up with the load off the wheels-- it's easier for the grease to flow. I use fast squeezes of my grease gun to get it started.

Craig is correct. Everthing I've read suggests that you "un-load" the front end to grease it. It does work better.
