sand it
prime it
paint it
probably do some body work along the way
the guys here told me i should take down to the metal , sandblast chemical blast soda blast what ever
i could of gone to metal with the cheap DA in a weeks effort but not a good idea i think
i am just sanding with blocks
first i went over it with a cheap- electric da 80 GRIT, 120 GRIT, 220 GRIT , then o just went around with 320 grit on blocks and long board
couple more turns around ,rough up the jambs then i drop the bumpers , sand what was hidden , mask it out .
and spray ..
never done it be fore ,
it may be a sloppy peeling mess . maybe not
want to get in the pool on the quality of a DIY firsttimer respray , 600 $ inclusive of all equipment and product.
If you have any cracking/peeling, that is the base coat turning loose and you would definately need to take it to metal and start over. New paint over bad base is not a good idea.
best leave the factory primer intact if there is no underlying corrosion , rust will start as soon as the metal is bare
sometimes one can see rust crystal formed the next morning..
thinking more..
it seems likely on that old a machine in that part of the country when you look close you will find *issues* which you will have to decide how to address,, .. body fill with who knows what under, rust bubbles , rust through, perhaps the dreaded failing sills and floor pans ..
if all the body is good with no issues one could carefully sand off the black , prime and paint.., but more than likely you are going to have to make decisions on what to about sheet metal issues, could be bondo covered rust holes or whole panels needing replacement,
i do not think there could be much problem putting another layer of paint on ,, after all mine has 5 layers in some places hahahaah
and as far as changing color, the primers should prevent any bleed.. and then there is the question of the color of the Jambs, trunk interior, engine compartment interior..
