MGB: GT engine change.

The engine in my GT is very tired, oil pressure was 30 PSI hot, so today I pulled it an started getting a "new" engine ready.

Saffyres spent 6 hours cleaning, that was the nastiest engine and engine bay I have ever come across, DPO was just a pig.

Any way, as I stripped the engine Saffyres cleaned, as I got into the engine I found it was just as dirty and sludgy inside, I guess DPO didn't feel oil changes were really necessary.

The head gave me fits, it would not come off for anything, I eventually managed to get all the studs except one out, I then just unscrewed the head. It goes to the machine shop Monday to have the stud pressed out (my hammer isn't big enough) and a mill, the surface is a little rough.

Now the best bit, the head is a 1974 big valve head, the block is the original 71 block, no cut-outs and shallow dish pistons, it's no wonder I couldn't stop the damn thing pinging!

I'm now going through the low mileage 1979 18V bottom end we have sitting in the garage, I'm changing the gaskets and seals, the head will go on that then it will go back in the car.

have valve reliefs cut into block if not already there. even the late CAM head requires this.

I'm not going to reuse that block now Mac, I'll use the 18V then that one will sit in the corner until I need it. The good thing about it is that it has never beed rebuilt, everything is factory standard.

Now, everyone says the big valve head and the CAM1106 head need the block cut-outs, but this head has been running on a block with no cutouts with no detrimental effects.
