It's time to get my hardtop painted, and I'm a bit torn as to which color to paint it. A few weeks ago, I would have said OEW was the only color for a factory hardtop on an Iris Blue car, but the black has started to grow on me. What do you think?

Would you consider painting it body colour (Iris Blue)?
(Here's mine in body colour, though it's obviously not an original factory top.)

My hardtop is painted body colour and looks 'correct'. I always think that hardtops in another colour make the car look like you've fitted any old roof.

Though having said that, I do like white roofs......

I'm complicated!

if your hardtop is smooth i think it looks better with the car's color or white. if it's pebble grained like the soft top, black. but then i've never seen a pebble grained one painted in anything other than black.

rom your photos, I like the white better for your color car. From what I have read, it really depends on the year of the car. I have a 1971 B and I have painted my hardtop black - (my car is Teal Blue). For your lighter color, I really like the look of the white top.

Best regards,

Jeff

Go for the white. It contrasts the color of the body and makes it look cleaner. With the black top, it looks like you picked it up used and never bothered with it.

I have a white MGB and had my hardtop painted white to match....two benefits came from this...

1) white is a LITTLE cooler in the hot summer sun

2) it matches the white MGB...and contrasts nicely on the red MGC.

I have a body coloured hardtop on the other MGC...which will contrast nicely on the white MGB if I want to swap out.

What color is the interior? My car has a dark navy interior, and my soft top and hardtop have the same color. I think it looks good. But on that light a color blue, the white looks good like the 01 car above parked at VIR.

The hardtops for mine are painted the same color as the cars. You do have me thinking though about how they would look black. Good question :)

I voted white but like body color as well. To me black only works on tops that are textured.

White or body color for an Iris Blue car. I'd lean a bit towards White for a more 'period' look however. That body color has always been one of my favorites.

What colour is your soft top? How does it look with your car? I think that if I were to paint a hard top black, I would also paint that ugly aluminum around the side windows black as well, as it detracts from the look of the top on the car, IMHO...

For an Iris Blue B, the original colours available for a factory hardtop were black, blue, or white.

I like the idea of dark blue.

Haha, that "ugly" aluminum trim is what sets a factory hardtop apart from all the copies. That'd be a bit like taking a Lotus Cortina and painting over that "horrible" stripe.

Thanks for the suggestions, but at this point, I'm not considering body color an option...I like that look on white, black, BRG, and sometimes red cars, but I feel there needs to be a contrast with the Iris Blue, or it could end up looking very monochromatic.
