You can be the first... Looks like it could work, but does is need to be naturalized in some way before painting, and could it maybe somehow promote rust???
it was painfully slow and messy. I tried on a test piece, didn't care for it.
I think it's basically lye in a spray can. Should work better with heat, which could be a little tricky for large stuff.
I've used it and lye for small stuff, and it works. Be very careful!!
Trust me I don't want to be the first. Oven cleaner should just come off with soap and water.
I've used oven cleaner to clean engine parts. It works well for disolving carbon such as on a cyl head. I never tried removing paint with it. I question the cost savings. I don't think the last I bought was 4 bucks a can and to do a whole car with 7 cans(even if it does work) ?? Think I'll stick to regular paint remover if the need arises.
I have used it on my engine and engine bay, I sprayed it down with Easy Off and ran it for a bit, drove to the car wash, and sprayed it down in there. Didn't take any paint off but it sure took off the grease and oil.
The main ingredient of Easy Off oven cleaner is sodium hydroxide. Yes, it removes paint.
I was looking for a cost effective method of removing paint from a factory hardtop. The fiberglass was old and full of microcracks on the gelcoat. Regular methol..... paint remover would potentially damage the old FRP. I ended up using a mixture of lye (sodium hydroxide), corn starch, and water. Made up gallons of the stuff for a few dollars versus $25 a quart for fiberglass safe paint remover in a can. It was a bit slow, but effectively removed every bit of automotive paint without damaging the old fiberglass.
Ended up with most of the homemade mixture left over. I thought I would save it for another project, but within a day or two, it had gelled solid from the corn starch.
Wear gloves and watch your eyes. Lye will disolve flesh as well.
