I've had the head of my 76 for about a month now while I redo the engine bay and paint the engine. Unfortunately I primed the engine with normal primer not high temp and have to remove it. Question is should I put oil in the cylinders to keep them lubricated until I install the new head.

Ray.

Regular primer is fine for the engine, you don't need high heat.

There should be enough residual oil in the engine to protect the bores. If in doubt wipe them with an oily rag.

Well yes but how long is the project..? If it going to be awhile you might want to turn the engine over by hand a few times once a month....

If you're going to shoot paint, you're going to mask off the tops of the cylinders anyway so just spray the walls with some WD, rotate the engine a couple of times and then soak a paper towel or two in WD40, smush one down into each cylinder (have 1&4 halfway up and 2&3 half way down) and tape off the deck. When you un-tape the deck after painting, vacuum the area first then remove the tape then reach into each cylinder and use the oily paper towel to wip each cylinder as you remove it. Lastly, spray each cylinder with WD then rotate the crank a couple of turns and re-install the head. When trying to keep an engine clean, anal is good ;)
