How does one remove the heater box and heater core??
Removed all visible hoses, screws, clips etc. Are there some hidden fasteners?? Getting cool here and would like to have heater core rodded/cleaned out. Haynes manual doesn't show much.

Feel around the base of the heater for any screw heads. They are a pain to remove, but I eventually got them all. The large one at the top was actually the toughest for me b/c it was all chewed up. Also make sure you removed all the stuff on the inside of the car like the panel where the defrost connects to. Do as the Haynes says and it should work. My heater was quite stubborn, especially since it was probably never removed for a few decades. But after a mild struggle I got it out. That's just my experience. Maybe someone else has a trick. Good luck.
Mine took the best part of an evening to remove...I hope it goes back in a bit smoother.
Similar to Ameer's advice, just keep looking...There's a screw still in there somewhere...then there is the cable to open and close the flap...watch for that!

From the posts I guess what you can see from the engine compartment is the tip of the iceberg...I'll look underneath.
Thanks guy's.
The tough part is the cable. I have gotten them out and back in with the cable still attached to the box. I find it easier to unhook the cable from the box. You get to it through the heater vent on the passengers side. Take the deflector off (4 screws) It's not an easy task but it can be done. As tim said you also have to take the windscreen defrost duck hoses and pipes out as well. Once you get the box out the rest is symple.
i just did mine and it's not as bad as it sounds. Tom B.
has the right advice.I took my cable off and you need monkey hands to get it back on The gasket material was keeping the box stuck to the comartment base. after 30 yrs i guess mine had never been replaced. after i disconnected everything i yanked it out. make sure the rebuilder pressure checks it before you put it back!

p.s. it was getting colder today (in n.y.) :-)
