Hello Gang -
it's been a while since I've reached out for help/insight but here goes:
When I did eng bay resto last year, I took apart the heater core "assembly" and cleaned it up. In putting it back I believe I missed a thing or two and here's why I think so --
Recently, a member put up those videos of the fellow Mark restoring a B -- in it, he showed how the heater core had this foam like material wrapped around it before placing into the assembly box -- in addition, it looks as though he also had some foam in the shape of a circle that outlined the hole in the back of the box (to go up flush against the firewall I presume).
Does anyone have some in-progress pics of their heater core and the foam on the rear of the box? Can I buy that stuff at an upolstery shop?)
I believe (now, like a knuckle head) mine was so deteriorated I actually thought it was junk that got into the box over the years and this is why i have heat coming thru my floor vents even when it's in the off position. Well, that's my hopeful diagnosis anyway considering the heater "valve" is all new.
Since I have to drain my coolant (see post from Monday, pin hole in radiator hose) and change the hose out anyway, I thought I'd tackle that item too.
Thanks in advance to anyone who has pics.... (no rush - I won't be able to do this for at least 3-4 weeks minimum as I'm laid up from surgery). If this writing is scatter-brain-ish, blame it on the percocet :-)
ciao!
Lou

You'll probably find the pics you need here

Lee,
Thank you kind sir! that link is a keeper! This is precisely what I needed! The video of that guy doing the resto blew passed this part so quickly ya can't see it but these stills are perfect!

Here's the shot of the guts side... Not sure I'd bother with any special foam next time. The stuff is suspiciously the same as the stuff you buy at home depot to stuff around window air conditioners. Really the key is just to make sure that when the box is closed, the air has nowhere to go except through the core.

Pick up a pair of the little rubber grommets for the holes where the heater tubes protrude through the case. Makes the core feel nice and snug in there.

Don't forget the felt seals on both sides of the control vane flapper. That will keep the unwanted hot air in the summer and make the defroster work better.
even better! thanks both Clay and Greg.
yeah, i have a sneeky suspicion I'm just gonna pull the whole unit out (again) and check those felt strips too - i should not be getting heat on my feet in the summer with the valve off! :-) The good news is, I've pulled it and reinstalled it once before - second time should encounter far fewer cuss words....
thanks again guys!
Lou,
The number 7 video in the "MGB Is Born" or whatever they call that, has a fairly detailed section on the heater.

Regardless of where you buy the foam, I think that one purpose was to keep the core from rubbing on the box and wearing a hole in the core, so I would use it. Good luck with the recovery!

good point - never thunk of that Chris....
thanks pard'ner.... i'm surviving... Percocet & Darvocet are my friends.... :-)
I used short pieces of 5/8" heater hose for the hose bibs instead of grommets. Same result, different means.
You can get the right size rubber grommet at a Baxter's Auto Parts store.

I will most definitely have this fix at least attempted complete before driving out to your place in June... :-)
