MGB: Hey Jeff, is 40 degerees advance too much?!

I went to my brother's Monday, to use him and his timing light. I knew it needed to be fine tuned, now that it has been Schlemmerized. When we started, it showed to be 40 deg advanced! Now, it's 14, and I can officially say.... WOW, I've been Schlemmerized! It's running smooth and awesome. You can even feel it pulling when I step on the gas at 60mph to pass.

Thanks Kelly for your help. And thanks to the rest of you on the forum for your advice.

Keith:

Glad to hear you got it all straightened out. I'm surprised it ran at all with 40 degrees of advance. I've heard of MGs with nearly 20 degrees of advance - but nothing over that.

Its not uncommon to see 30+ degrees at idle when the crank pulley goes bad. 40+ isn't the best setup when the marks are correct though!!! :D

I had that problem and had to get it to TDC and remark the pully.

I rebuild a 440 dodge engine, and started it. It ran but something was wrong, when we noticed the headers starting to glow cherry red. It was 180 degrees out. We FU ed. Pulled the dizzy rotated it 180, and bingo all was fine.

That's about the only engine that will run and stay running 180-out!!! No British car, GM, Ford, VW, Toyota, or any other make I can think of will run at 180-out. Maybe bang a couple times, but not run!
