Hi guys I am new to th MG community I will possibly be going to pick up my first mg tomorrow morning it is in great condition except it could use some paint. Anyways i Have talked the guy into a price of $1400 plus an M1 garand is this a good deal? I guess about a $2300 value? He took me out for a ride in it and it pulls good and the manual transmission seems to shift out well. The interior is immaculate with a new top and carpet etc. The only bad is about a one inch crack in the shoulder of the drivers seat it includeds manuals, a boot to cover the passengers seat, and i guess the boot to cover for when the tops down idk, but it all looks good.... he says the engine was recenltly rebuilt and it looks to me that all engine components are new or at least fairly new. It has decent tires and a spare. It started ant the turn of a key without pumping or priming and its a craburated car lol im not use to that. here is a link what do you think? am i getting a good deal?

Hi Wesley,

Get as complete a history of the car as you can: what was done, when it was done, and who did it. If the engine was recently rebuilt, the PO should have receipts for parts and labor. Find out exactly what was done, expecially if things were oversized, overbored, new bearings, pistons, etc. It'll help you sort things out in the future.

40 mpg sounds a bit, umm, optimistic.

Can't speak for the Nashville area, but WW II vintage M1 Garands in good condition are usually over 1k here in TX. Some go higher; your call on that if you think it's worth it.

Good luck with the car and post some pics of the car when you get the chance. It's siblings always want to see the new baby.

Cheers,

Glen

rust? there's a ton of posts on what to look for here....i know we leaned on them heavily. there must be a local mg club.....maybe someone knows that car?! but it looks like a good car if all the "heavy lifting" has been done already.

good luck

Welcome!

Looks like a good deal to me. $1,400 and it runs and drives, looks decent.... Not bad!

i looked the car over meticulously and there is not the slightest hint of rust on it anywhere... and my M1 is a Korean War vintage worth about $600 bucks from the CMP

Well, if that's the case, then you're looking at about $2k or so. If the PO can produce the receipts and data for the engine rebuild, then I'd say jump on it.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Glen

Agree with Glen and most everyone else. Get some paperwork to confirm everything. Getting rid of a nice Garand would be hard for me to do unless the car was in good shape. Don't chomp at the bit over one car too much. Nice ones pop up now and then. Just need to be looking all the time, look at a few and learn the nature of the problems and find a good one. I got kinda lucky the one I got was here in town and the guy was moving to Boston, so he really wanted to sell. As it would happen, as soon as I bought the Midget, there was a very nice MGBGT for sale about an hour away for the same money. :moody:

im pretty sure im gonna get the car. I think it ir really worth it, plus i know that if i have any problems there are a ton of great people on here willing to help a fellow enthusiast and i believe nashville has a british car club that will help also. I will post some pics as soon as i get it home tomorrow afternoon. Wish me luck guys. I will try to get the owner to produce some reciepts etc... but it looks to have been redone all thr thing like alternator starter etc look brand new, and there is hardly a speck of dust on the engine components
