Ok this is a hard one...

Where can I get number 33 in the diagram? This is an induction heater for an HS4 or HIF type carb. I think that Austin Americas had them. I need two working heaters.

Paul.

I think you had it pegged. I don't remember if the AA had them, but if they did, it's the only car over here that did in 1 1/2".

The Austin Marina had them, but only in 1 3/4". Not sure what you are wanting to do, but back in the day my dad and I got the induction heaters on our fleet of family Marinas operating. It just required bending the contact out far enough to ground against the manifold. We hooked up the seat belt indicator light to the circuit so we could see when the heater was operating. It's a make and break circuit. As the heater coil heats up, the thermostat opens, then closes as it cools.

In sub zero, Denver, Colorado weather you could notice a little improvement in running, but it wasn't enough to make the work to keep them operating worth while.

The heater that wrapped around the suction chamber of the Marina 1 3/4" HIF did help out by keeping the oil from solidifying, but changing to ATF solved that problem.

From what we could tell, these gizmos were necessary to allow the car to pass the extended emmission control testing in sub zero weather, but didn't really have much use in day to day driving. Out of all the Marina's we processed not one had an operable intake heater when purchased. Non of them had adequate grounding to function without modification.

Not that it will help much, but my 1959 Morris Minor had one on it's 1 1/4" carb. It was an original California car, and I don't remember seeing a wire for it. But now, looking at the Shop Manual, it says to dis-connect the single snap connector to the wiper motor, use a double snap to splice the two together, and that's where the induction heater gets it's power. Anyways, I wonder what countries got induction heaters? Canadians, maybe?

Would it be the same as those used on the z/s carburetted MGBs?

The Leyland Parts catalogue up to September 1976 shows part # AUD 9418, 2 required, but doesn't specify years, countries, etc. The September 1976 On catalogue mentions one being an option used on the Z/S carb, and it's a 4-bolt square configuration.

My morris minor had one too...

I am certain that Austin Americas had them on their HS4's. And it appears to be optional on the later HIF mgb. I am not running carbs anymore, rather EFI, and I would benefit from this device. Any one have some or know where to get them?

Paul. Back when I worked for Scotland Yard British Cars in Denver, Co. We parted out a lot of AAs. I don't recall ever seeing one of these heaters.

The person who would know better than I would be one of the past owners of that company.

I'd drop him a line. If anyone knows if any cars came into the states with these, he will.

good luck

kelvin.

wanna know more about the EFI

Paul,

Mark already informed you about the OEM No. of the items you are looking for and I checked that too, he is right.
I found them listed in the catalogue of Anglo Parts -> http://www.angloparts.com <- listed as "spacer and heatinduction" mentioned as 'for cold climates only'. The No. in their catalogue is 101.224

As I don't know whether they can deliver this spares or not, just have a look at their site and and maybe send them a mail.

I'm somewhat surprised you haven't heard from the people who are in the true cold climates. I watched the John Twist video on the heaters, and the one he was testing started working at @ 15 degrees F! Kinda Freezing! I'm also curious if the holes on a HS4/HIF4 gasket would line up with two diagonal holes on a ZS, just in case someone had heaters for the ZS. Maybe someone will bring some to Fullerton!

The HIF44, which is used with the supercharger setup, is also listed as a bolt on replacement for the ZS175. I believe that the three carbs share a common bolt pattern. RAY

I have a feeling that Skip Harris the "Marina Man" may have the heaters you're looking for.

Paul. Jeff has a good point. If you can use the Marina 1 3/4" SU heaters, then Skippy is the guy to go to. The diagonal bolt pattern is the same as the 1 1/2" SU. The bore will be just a bit bigger.

The only problem could be the heater ground contact location, as it may miss the manifold/carb body.
