"junk" wood, sandpaper, wood screws, ingenuity. presto! i can show more pictures if you wanna see how i did it in detail, but its really pretty self explanatory. the transmission bit is basically a picture frame made out of 2 x 4s; the engine bit goes around the oil pan where the oil pan sits with the lip on the frame.

James, looks good. Is the engine nice and stable? Guess I could design one myself, but do you have a drawing or measurements? I've got an old spare engine strapped to a tire sitting on a moving dolly. I think I'd like to move it to something a little more elegant. :)
john, this is a picture of the "box" without the engine in it. the thinner board goes between the front plate and the oil pan. the shape matches the oil pan. i just put a spare pan upside down on the workbench and fiddled with it until i got it right. its stable considering the low center of gravity and the weight of the engine. my boards have a little warp but the weight of the engine will flatten them out pretty quickly.
Well done. I used to do mine that way until I realized that I could get a furniture dolly from HF for about $8 that was carpeted and put together.
I use the $10 Harbor Freight furniture dolly (it was cheaper than buying 4 casters!), but I screwed a box almost identical to the one James made to it. Might not have been necessary, but I wanted to be sure the block didn't tip over in case I was rolling it around and a caster hit a rock or something.
The trans stand is just the cheapest HF engine stand. Takes up more room than storing the trans vertically, but it makes it nice to work on it...
James, what are the inside dimensions of the engine dolly, please?
I fished an old shopping cart out of the river and took the wheels of it. I've been loking for a use, looks like that would be a good one.
Ron....the inside dimensions of mine are 16" long by 10" wide. I used 2x6s for the sides, 1x6 for the front (just because I didn't have any more 2x6 scrap), and 1x4 across the back (same reason). You'll need to use 1x4 or 1x6 on the back, since 2x stock won't fit between the backplate and the oil pan.
