After having the old hood liner with the fiber backing fall off while driving I decided to something different. Two years later and I have installed a black hood liner made out of foam material. It is about 1/4 inch thick and needed only a little trimming to fit. I got the liner from Classic 9 Leather Shop. Only cost $39.00 before shipping. I did manage to take the hood off by myself and laid it on the dinning room carpet. Between using Goof Off to remove the old glue and gunk and the 3M 80 adhesive, it did get a little smelly in the house. If you are not an originally fan, it is a good product to use. You can get a stick-on MG decal for about $10 extra. As you can see, I stayed with basic black.

The handle is circa 1990's the rest of the car is 1967. Only used broom handle to get hood way open to take picture, the original hood prop is still usable.
Put the same one on my B a month ago. Love it. Looks good and keeps the heat and noise down better than the old fiber pad did. I highly reccomend it.

Good to hear. I just did mine too. Though I am a big fan of originality I am willing to make a few "reversible" modifications in the interest of form and function.
My new to me hood is prepped for paint. It was suggested to me, that I use a black rubber undercoating in place of the liner used by most. Has anyone done/seen this?
Thanks, Tommy

Do yourself a favor...don't...Just bite the bullet and use the proper material.
Many years ago when the OEM fluff was falling off (and my car was pretty much a mess), I made the wacko decision to fix up the underside of the bonnet. Cleaned off the the remaining adhesive, had the underside painted & put a black liner (from VB I think) on. It's still the nicest paint on the car and having a clean hood got me going on detailing the rest of the engine bay.

How do you remove all the old stuck on liner? Just plain ole elbow grease? My liner has been gone since I got the car. But there are lots of spots with very stiff and sharp remains that seem to be permanently attached. I have the black vinyl liner ready to go, but I would assume you need to get the surface nice and smooth or else all the little imperfections will show through.
Scott,
It's been a while, so I don't recall exactly what I used, but you can guess the usual suspects. Paint thinner, Goof Off, & yeah, elbow grease. The liner I have is fairly thick and somewhat compliant. I suspect it will hide some sins. But I wanted a decent paint job underneath, so I wire brushed/sanded/whatever to get the metal reasonably smooth before painting.

I used mineral spirits to get the old adhesive off....with lots of scrubbing. I also have the new style foam liner with the MG logo. It has stayed on for three years and still looks great.
Goof-Off will remove the old glue. Smells like it is killing brain cells, so have lots of ventilation.
To all of those that have been asking, I got this liner off EBay. Do a search for MG hood liner and it will come up. Cost is pretty reasonable. Be sure to use the 3M #80 spray adhesive like they say to. It is made for this type of material. And, if you get someone to help you, you won't need to take the bonnet off the car to install it.
