I have my B totally stripped, fixed, sanded (120 so far) and ready for paint top, bottom, inside, out... and I can't find anywhere to guess how much paint to buy? I've chosen DuPont Variprime (one qt plus activator so far) and the related Nason sealer (also just one qt plus pint activator) and want to use DuPont ChromaOne top coat. Anyone help? I'm new to painting, if that isn't clear enough yet.

I used about 3 quarts of PPG Omni AU to shoot my car. Omni doesn't seem to cover very well, and I really should have applied one more coat. That would have probably meant one more quart.

HTH!

Chroma covers ok but I just finshed a B and with paint that has and activator its usually 4:1:1 forgot what the dupont sheet says. 4:1:1 tend to be thick but needs more to cover well. Tint your sealer a little if you can. I bought a 1/2 gal and had about a pint left. I did thin the last coat by doubling the reducer to get a good coverage coat.

including the underside, too? I have the thing on a rotator and there isn't an inch that doesn't need paint.

It largly depends on your gun too. A good HPLV gun will use a lot less. A cheap hplv gun will use a lot more. They told me 3 qts at the paint shop and I eneded up being about 1/2 gal shy (repainted a few parts too).

PPG Omni is the finish that I have usede on the last two.
The MGB roadster 2.5 quarts, plus reducer, plus hardner.
A Bronco II used 3 quarts, plus reducer, plus hardner.

This was to only paint the exterior. No allowance for the undersides and interior. One advantage to staying with the same colours.

Dont forget extra for errors, as as fixed a door sag I caused another onthe trunk lid by being to aggressive... so now another round of 600 wet and redo the trunk area with a mist over.... aghhh

I understand Variprime goes on thin (it's a self etch) so could one qt (plus the activator qt) do entire underside, topside, interior, engine bay, trunk, etc?
The sealer is heavy on the topside because of smooth sanding, so could I do the entire thing in 3 qts (plus the activator)??
The topcoats are at least 3 qts for the top and maybe 3 more for the underside and engine bay/trunk/interior??? I'll be colorsanding the topside to make it nice. No clear coats on this car.
Does that sound reasonable??

Rinshed-Mason
1 gal of epoxy primer, 1 qt activator
1 gal of filler/sealer primer - same base, different additives
3 qt of color (tartan red)
1 gal clear, 1 qt activator
1 gal reducer
1 gal SEM Proliner bedliner
$1700 with all the supplies, wipes, sandpaper, tape, buffers, etc.
There is more if you want a complete list but thats what I remember for now.

I walked into the paint/body suppy store and told the guys what I was going to do and what kind of car. They set me up with everything I needed.

I have pictures here if you feel like looking

3 qts will give you at least five good coats of base color, and you'll want at least three clear over that for a really nice finish.

Wow. That's a lot of work! I appreciate the help. The pics are great. I'd like to know the sequence you followed when you did inside/outside of things like bonnet and doors, trunk, etc. I assume first caulk everything with seam sealer, then mask and paint one side all coats, then mask the new color, turn over, then do the other side? I'm doing the bottom first after masking off the topside, engine bay, etc. When that's done, I should do the insides of doors and lids, then turn the chassis over and mask off the main body panels and do the interior, engine bay, and trunk. THen mount the front valance, install doors and lids, more masking, and then spray the entire main body panels. Does that seem right? Wrong?
