I'm trying to calculate how much primer, paint and clear coat I will need to paint my 1973 MGB. I will be using PPG Omni BC/CC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The paint store isn't very close to the house and isn't open on weekends so I want to make sure I'm covered but don't want to buy a lot more than required.

Thanks in advance

Terry

I am using PPG MP-170 epoxy primer in my refinishing of my engine compartment and related parts, including, heater, front end, bumper brackets, both front and back, and it looks like I will likely use 2 qts or so. None of it will go to waste. Lots of little nooks and crannies to miss and respray to eat up the paint. I am blasting and painting spare parts as well just because it's easier to do it now than later. I used about a qt of MAE with hardner for a topcoat in the engine bay itself. Hope this helps you.

On the other hand. I used a gallon on an old 1974 Pontiac firebird years ago. I don't think that a B should use more than 2 qts for just the outside, but I'd rather have extra when I need it than have to wait to go to the paint store to finish. BTW PPG MAE in a semi-gloss looks great for all the black stuff, not too bright, not too dull. Catsh the sun just right and it looks like it has a tiny bit of metalic in it, although it does not, but the surface has this neat sheen like velvet

Thanks Gerry - If I might ask another question. I used the Epoxy primer on the car. I had to fix a couple areas after I sprayed the Epoxy. Now do I clean the surface before I spray the 2K primer? If so with what? I tried blowing off with air gun and then wipe with Wax Degreaser Cleaner on a couple areas I had to reshoot the Epoxy but it looked like a film was left on the spot.

Ought to call the paint store to be sure, but I'd wipe the area down with their gun cleaning solvent, MR100, to be sure that everything the wax remover missed comes off. The wax removers I've used was not much more than mineral spirits with some hepthane added, and did not remove everything. You should not be able to hurt the epoxy primer with the solvent

My '73 recently took 2 quarts, and it took almost every drop.

Thanks guys.... looks like I will go ahead and spray one coat with the quart I have then plan another trip to the paint store next week. Would you say I would need a minimum of 2 quarts for the base coat and another 2 quarts for the clear coat too then?

Also do you use a sealer between your primer coat and base coat?
