MGB: Hubs for disc brake conversion

I am going to use the Green brackets for MGB calipers for disc brakes on the front. If I understand correctly I need MGA 1600 hubs, disc wheels for me. The guy with parts in Newport News has lots of hubs but doesn't know one from another. How do you tell one hub from another, is there anything distinctive about the 1600 disc hubs?

The bearing size will be smaller to match your Magnette in the MGA hub. Its a very, very slim chance he'll have them!

If you look in the Moss MGA catalog all 3 types of hub are shown.

Jeff, I'm not sure I follow you. The bearings used for both Magnette and MGA hubs, disk or drum, are all the same are they not?

One thing to look for is the MGB hubs use tapered roller bearings while the MGA hubs use ball bearings. I believe the outer diameter for the MGA's ball bearing is notably larger when held beside the MDB hub.

What I meant to say is that the spindle size is smaller in the MGA/Magnette, and thus the ID of the bearing. Sorry for the confusion. The guy in Newport News has a photo displayed on Ebay of a pile of hubs. Most have the bearings still installed, as they came off the car, so you could tell by the bearing ID size pretty quickly.

bearings are 6304 outer and 6306 inner for MGA & Magnette hubs

Stupidly asking...
Will the hub have a disc attached? Is there some other obvious feature that can be easily described? Is it pretty clear that it is not a drum hub?

Yeah, I'll look at the Moss Catalogue.

OK, the drum hub just has four studs but the disc brake hub has four studs and four bolts in "dimples" for to attach the brake disc. Got it!

Moss lists an early 1600 hub and a later one which is also used in the MK II, would the later ones work in a Magnette? Thanks.

That's interesting. I never knew that there were variations. One person who would know if there is a difference is Cecilia at Scarborough Faire. I am sure that she would be willing to give her opinion.
When I bought my hubs I just specified that they be disc brake hubs and had no problem.

Cheers,

re the disc brake conversion....if you havent done it, take my advice and do it as soon as possible...I'd done everything possible to the drums and they were basically dangerous even if I tried to convince myself otherwise...now with the discs I dont even think I'll bother putting a booster on...they are fine and I can easily lock em at 60 mph...absolutely essential.
Same applies to the 3.9 diff...mine is absolutely stock with 80000 miles on it and it easily pulls the higher gearing and absolutely everything about is better, including the intermediate gears, and I live in a hilly rural area....why they didnt come from the factory with a 3.9 is beyond me as the 4.55 is just ridiculous
