Loma happened to think that the valve cover wasn't tightened down enough, so he have me some shims to put under the washers!! Obviously, before it was able to suck a little air under it!! It probaly didn't leak, because it was sucking enough air under it to counteract any leakage!! I was trying to figger out how I got along for so long without a problem in that department!! The weirdest little things can sure cause a problem!! Anyway, I'm going back down to re-do that compression test!!!!

How do you tell if the oil cap is vented or not? I've just got the standard-issue oil cap, as far as I can tell. (The one with the names of all the oils on it...)

the one i have has a tiny hole in the top. it's chrome though. the one i use, with all the oil names on it, is hard plastic and isn't vented.

A parts catalog will tell which cap you should have and all vented ones have a tiny hole to the outside someplace on them. There is a recommended change period for the original ones. There's a little filter made in them that can stop up.

There are three styles of caps; chromed vented, plastic vented, and plastic unvented. The vented plastic is longer than the unvented plstic one. You should be able to put your mouth around the bottom and blow if it is vented.
Since you don't have a problem, you probably have the vented cap.

Chris, et. al.
I have 69 B with vented plastic cap. When I pulled the valve cover there was a cylindrical piece of plastic about and inch long and inch or so across sitting between pistons 1 & 2 just under where the cap fits. I have never seen a new one so am trying to figure out if this somehow is part of the cap that just dropped down. There was a small circular piece of foam there with it. I don't seem to have a problem as cap vents and doesn't blow oil around but would be nice to know if I am missing something.

Does your cap look like the bottom broke off?
