MGB: I've done it and I am therefore an MG god!

Only a few of you can truly appreciated the monumental task I have just performed.

Only those of you who have done what I just did do not have to bow before me if you see me.

I am an MG god because I have seen the other side and returned unscathed (except for a few scratches on my left knuckle)

Chris, here-fore after known as the 'MG God'!

WITH the dash in place.

Cheering is allowed now!

Welcome to the club.
Wait...what's that huge cheater strap doing on there? I guess you can have partial credit, but a real god does it bare-handed without such aids. ;)

Now you just have to complete all the other tasks raised by others in the thread to fully qualify.

When windscreen was mentioned I drew a breath. I replaced the glass in mine tonight after having removed all the Anodizing and making all four pieces of the frame shine like stainless. I am thinking of installing it tomorrow.

It's off? Why?

Chris

I take that off and put it back on once a week when I wash and wax the car so I don't get wax on the rubber and also to get the paint underneath cleaned and waxed as well. I hadn't seen the strap method before. I use a big c-clamp, but only if I've replaced the seal between the frame and body. Way to work smarter, not harder!

In case anyone wants to call me on the once a week thing, I meant it as an obvious joke, but it has seemed lately that it has gone on and off quite a few times. It may come off again soon since the new windshield is leaking in a couple of places.

Anyone can do that!

He left out the part about inerting the top two bolts. Heck, the windscreen is easy, getting the bolts in is what's hard!

You mention MG god but this can also include MGA and others as the TD and TC. You must now continue the quest by completing three other challenges. First challenge is that you must install the original bent up chrome trim in the MGA Coupe windscreen and backglass to be on your way to truly earn title of MG god!!

'Zactly', Brian. Took me ages to get that last little bugger in on the drivers side. Only those that have done it know about those little critters. Luckily, that's where I've got my Vac Gauge - (used to be where the OD switch was) so I had a 2" hole I could poke a finger in to support the bolt head while I turned the spanner a 12th of a turn at a time.
Other side was easier, just open the glove box and there it is, no glove box insert yet. Damn, I'm giving all my secrets away.
I'm losing my Godliness.

Thanks, Jack. I got a chuckle out of that one. I put both bumpers on and connected up the tail lights and plate lights. Have a few issues with the grounds for the front parkers, BUT I'm so close I can taste it. Just over 2 years and I'm almost done. (Well enough for rego, I don't think I'll ever be 'done').

One thing I found when I moved to the States, it seems to be a lot easier to install the windscreen on a LHD car, there just seems to be a whole lot more room, and the later US dash makes it even easier - you can get your whole hand up behind the dash, those who have never installed a windscreen in a RHD steel dash car have no idea how impressive your feat is Chris. You have indeed gained the status of MG God!

Yep, think about it, on a RHD car you have the steering column, instruments and wiper motor all in close proximity to the mounting bolts - it makes that side a real bitch to do, especially with the edge of a metal dash trying to lacerate your fingers.

I pulled the wiper mechanism out of a RHD steel dash car a couple of weeks ago, I'd forgotten just how little room there is that side behind the dash.

I would be concerned about the rear spinners on the wires causing the strap to tighten too much on acceleration and pulling the windscreen into the cockpit. Might even damage the quarterlights. :)

Nice tecnique. Well done.

Chris, let me see if I have this right, you pulled down on the bottom of the frame and attached the front two bolts and then pulled on the top to line up the back two?

Aug 20, 2008 07:40:58

Chris, a question about your process using the straps. I see them in two different positions; did you use one position for the top bolts and one for the bottom?

Thanks

Nice job, that is a bear to get back on. When I got mine all put back together with new seals, I managed to get it on only to strip out one of the threads that holds the side post down. Drove that way for a year or two then finally took it back of and put an insert in. Twice the fun.

Mike The Wiz: I think you're LHD v.s. RHD Windscreen issue has more to do with which hand you favor. Whether you're lefthanded or righthanded, that's all.

I see absolutely no other reasoning behind one being easier or harder than that.

You dated Pamela Anderson and she didn't quite fit in the MG; pushing your windshield forward. That's why you've done it twice.
