So that is what we know about "The Great Hydrogen Scam"!

In other news, has anyone had experience with converting to propane. I know that there would be lots of drawbacks like storage and metering, but I am curious as to any hands on experience anyone here might have had.

No personal LP experience but I used to maintain a couple of light trucks that ran on it. Spark plugs and oil was always as clean as new and I never had to do anything to the propane systems.

I was reading up on Acetone as a fuel additive yesterday. It works for some and not for others but the proper mix is critical and some may have been overdosing. The optimum mix is 3 oz per 10 gallons of gasoline or 2 oz per 10 gallons of diesel; this from a guy who has been using it for 30 years. He has never experienced any harm to any part of the fuel systems or engines he's used it in. You need to find pure Acetone that has no Benzonite, (may be spelled wrong), or other additives. Pharmacies and some farm supply stores have the pure stuff, don't trust a lable that says 100% pure, read the ingrediants panel. I'm going to try it in the Travco for sure and maybe the Saab. I was always leary but after checking out about a half dozen sites on the subject I'm ready to spring for it. It will be a good while before I have any results, don't know when or where the next Travco trip will be. It has been getting 14 MPG alone or 13 pulling the Saab or my GMC Safari van on a trailer.

Jack, my father in law has a generator that runs on propane, the conversion kit was an option on the unit he purchased. It works flawlessly, no metering issues that I'm aware of. Storage is no biggie since most folks have propane for gas grills, campers etc. One good thing is you don't have to worry about the gas going bad. Funny thing is, he's had it for 4 or 5 years now and has not lost power since installing it. He does test it every couple of months.

No experience myself. I believe it's relatively common in England.

Yep Brian, that's what happens when you buy a generator. I have two, both run on gasoline, and I have only had to run one of them in the past zillion years, and that was only for a day when bad weather took out every one's power around here. Can't sell them though cause sure as I do I'll need 'em.

JDW, do you have any links for reference lead ups on acetone? I never gave that stuff a thought. What does it do and how does it do it?

Propane conversions were fairly common at one time - I believe a lot were done in Canada. I think that these days there is no advantage, dollar wise, to doing it. It is cleaner, but my guess is that $/mile it may now be more expensive.

The BIG issue with them is crash-worthiness - where to put a fair size, pressurized, tank so that it won't rupture in an accident. Note that a number of tunnels do not allow vehicles with propane, or LNG, tanks over a certain size to go through!

This is rather long and I found that many of the other sites got their information here, some are direct copy and paste with a different color background.

I went shopping for acetone today and found a readilly available 100% pure brand. It is Kleen-Strip brand, made in Memphis, TN.

JDW, that is an interesting site. Thanks.

Simply breathtaking JDW! And it is going to be soooo easy to verify what the guy says. I just can't wait.

In addition, he jumps all over the ethanol thing. I have long thought, as expressed many times here, that ethanol was about the worst thing you could do for your car, the environment AND our economic/food situation.

Let's see. Now where IS that beauty supply house?

Morgan had a propane plus 8 in production when US emissions were too strict for the V8. I don't think they were too popular though.

Actually, they were converted here - but in essence, yes - it was to get around the emission regs without having to do too many modifications. There is some doubt as to if it was legal or not! I know somebody who has one - long since converted back to gasoline!

Some of the guys on the Jensen email list I used to be a member of converted their Interceptors to propane (LPG). I think all of them were Down Under. Less HP, shorter distance per tank, but apparently it's cheaper than petrol?

The interceptor uses the Mopar BB and RB blocks. I don't know what they had to change like valve seats, etc.

There's a lot of debate on the whole acetone thing. I've also heard that on older cars acetone can hasten the failure of rubber seals. Just hearsay though.
