my inlet manifold looks like a strange morph of the early dual SU manifold an the later Zenith manifold. im currently running dual hs4's. the problem is that my manifold flange where it connects to the head has the 2 "step" (regular flange with an extra semicircular one cast onto it) setup like the zenith type but my exhaust is the earlier SU (thinner) type. could this be a dpo buying a later, detoxed, su conversion manifold??
cheers Alistair

there are different flange thicknesses.

You have to adapt to it.

use shims to deal with the difference. A piece of brass stock at the hardware store should cost maybe $4.

stick the shims behind where it has to be and be done with it

Grind an edge off of some common flat washers so that they will go flat against the thinner manifold by slipping by the edge of the thicker one. You will probably need two per stud. Then put the heavy wrought washer over that. It should rest pretty flat as it is supposed to but if it doesn't exactly don't worry. The slop in the stud bore will allow it to cock a little bit and get even pressure on both sides. If you can, at least use the taller unified thread nuts or better yet some brass ones of the same size like the down pipe nuts. That will make removal in the future LOTS more pleasant. Remember, put the gasket in with the steel side out.

BTW: I have not forgotten the Land Crab. Thanks for all of your leg work Alistair. I just don't have the money to do the deed right now. Hopefully things will get good enough around here for me to do it this winter and just maybe the guy will still have it. If it is supposed to happen it will. LOL
