On my 74 b the insulation on the carb's heat shield has long disappeared. I have read about the possibility of vapor lock. Is it an issue in hot climates or a good idea to replace this insulation? I saw an article about using haardiplank cement board soffit-I am a carpenter so I have lots of it-but it seems...odd. What do you use? Thanks.

Paul, yes, replace the insulation! It keeps the heat away from the float bowl (bowls) It can cause vapor lock, and also cause a "car-b-q" something you really don't want. I believe Moss Motors has it, or if you think what you have is heat resistant, then use it. But use something, I'd hate to see you have a bad day.....Vic

There is a member on BBS who sells kits to replace the insulation on our heatshields. Maybe someone can give his name, I apoligize for not being able to remember. His kit is the way to go instead of using house sidding. Do a search for heatshield insulation and I bet you will come up with lots of info

As Gerry mentioned, I have replacement insulation available for both HS4 and HIF4 setups. The ceramic-based insulation is very similar to the original insulation in thickness and color. Also, the brass rivets that I include with the HS4 sets are nearly identical to those originally on my heat shield.

I have details at:

Unfortunately, this link often doesn't work if several people have tried to access the website within a short period of time (the free Geocities site has a data transfer limit). However, you can check out the MGBE post:

or email me with any questions at project_mgb@yahoo.com

Thanks,

I've bought Eric's product - looks good, puts together easy, as good or better than original.
