was there a particular year in which the factory used the "hang down" (i.e. you attached the filter from below instead of from on top) spin on filter?
Not the cannister as used real early, but a spin on.
Moss doesn't describe them by year.
And it appears that the filter itself is different (at least Moss gives them a different number).

I have one on my 68, but I put it on to be rid of the old cannister filter. As I recall, it was a only on for a short period in the early 70s. My recollection is somewhere between 70 and 74, possibly 70-72 or 72-74. Someone who owns one of the early 70s cars may be better able to narrow it down for you. Seems like it was only a two year thing. With mine, I use a Purolator PF-34 filter. Larger than the the later shortys such as the Fram PH-966B, with a larger filtration capacity. Only once have I gotten a spark from the battery connection on the solenoid, but my guess is that the close proximity of it to that connection may have caused a fire or two, as well as its rather tight quarters between the frame and pan, and that killed it. I persist in using it as it has one good advantage, it doesn't drain back into the pan when the engine is off and ends up holding an extra quantity of oil for the system. However, if you don't mind the messier inverted filters, they are easier and probably safer for most folks to deal with. Or, you could always do a remote location adapter for a hanging filter.

So it's a watch out for thing. Makes it hard to find an aftermarket filter!
Do you have a filter number I can cross reference?
(something tells me the difference might be as inconsequential as the backflow valve...if threads and sealing ring are compatible.)
Fram PH 3600 or Purolator PF-34 are good ones to cross reference if you want a longer bodied unit. You can also use the equivalent of the Fram PH 966B.

One of things to keep in mind on the hanging filter, my experience has more to do with the aftermerket ones, but I assume the same issues would be with the factory one as well, because of the location of the spin-on oil filter on hanging types, you are somewhat limited to what kind of filter you can use, for instance I couldn't use the KN oil filter because it's diameter was too big for the area, with the inverted unit this would not have been a problem.
I think most of the haging filters you'll find on a B were robbed off of other models of Austin, etc... I have one here that I haven't fit due to clearance issue between the alternator, block, starter, etc... Despite the drainback issue with an inverted filter, I decided its a better setup and haven't installed the hanging version. Yet.
MGB uesed a hang down filter on some 74 model year cars. The change was in Dec 73, in Feb 74 they reverted back to the inverted oil filter. See Clausager on page 148.
The filter interchanged with a 1275 Midget filter. The hangdown filters don't need an anti-drain back valve or a bypass valve, the filter adapter has a bypass valve. I think the Austin Marina used this type filter.
I had one of these filters on my 74B and have changed it back to the inverted filter. I used a Purolator L10028. I think a Toyota Tacoma filter will also work, it has anti drain back and bypass valves but should work OK.

BUT... after looking at my VB Cat. It states that the hang down and the top mount adapters were both used for the '71 model year.

Paul, is that early '71 as in GK, or late '71 as in 18V? Mine is a GK and had the inverted version. I'd be inclined to think Clifton is right.

I second that as well, it defintely allows for more filter choices, and in the end it's alot easier to change.
