I get the batteries are wired in series, but is there typically one battery bay that gets used? do people replace the battery cables to accommodate having to move the ground cable? (and so on, and so forth). I guess i get the "theory", curious about the "practice".

Matt, usually the single 12v is put in the opposite side of driver.
Update your user info as to what year car to help with easier identification.

Matt.

Just went through this process.

Bought 12V at Sear's, bought battery boxes from Moss. It is a snug fit. let me know and I will send the part #. Purchased a longer ground cable (a positive or RED cable which has a wider end in order to fit the wider positive battery terminal end.) I use the same hole for the ground. Also, the cable that connects the 6V batteries needs to be removed.

I also installed a battery cut-off switch. I have come to learn that despite the car being turned off there are "hot" wires that can burn.

Also just did this to a 70 roadster. Group 26 battery. The existing crossover cable had a hold down clip with bolt up in the cavity between the two battery compartments. I simply sanded around it to get a good bare metal surface and moved the stock ground to that location. It was a solid bolt on connection, actually better than the old location I thought. The original cable reached the new battery perfectly.

Matt,
What they said above, just have to find a new location for the ground.
Here's my setup:
I have a 74 and have a 26R-DL Duralast from Auto Zone, 710 cranking amps/575 cold cranking amps.(32dg F), 90 reserve capacity, measures 8.75i X 6.75i at the top (for the handy handle) and 7.75i X 6.75i at the base. I didn't need the Moss battery box as my cage was in good condition. The compartment widens from the base to the top and it fits nicely, no trimming of the battery, with room to spare.

When I did mine, there was a hole for the ground in exactly the same place in the pass. box and the driver box
