I finally got my right rear brakes, oil seal, wheel bearing, backplate, and tire back on and started to do the left side. First thing I noticed when I removed the knock off was the cotter pin on the axel shaft nut was missing. Then I tried to take off the wire wheal and all the spokes started flexing and moving where they join the inner hub on the wheel. I could flex the inner hub on the wire wheel around (allot!). If this right?

No, there should be no play what so ever. You need a wheel.

Get a new set or a good second hand wheel. Good thing you caught it now before you spun the hub and the wheel rolled off!!

Come to the darkside... install minilites and leave the wires in the garage!

Question about the minilites: where is a good source for them? What brands are better? I've heard of Minitour (or something like that?). I plan to take the wires off and install minilites on the GT, but I was informed there were no knockoff minilites.

Steve:

I have only seen one brand - they are actually a minilite lookalike - and both Moss and VB sell them. I also saw them at the MGOC headquarters near Cambridge in the UK. They are the only ones I have seen that are knock-off compatible.

Moss has them on sale even as we speak.

You may be able to find someone who rebuilds them. Make very sure they are experienced. Forget who but there is someone in your area that is very good on wire wheels and does national business.

Perhaps you're thinking of Hendrix Wire Wheel in Greensboro?

HTH!

The Moss minilite lookalikes are MINATOR made in the UK. I just put a set of the knock off type on my 66 MGB and I think they are great, made the car drive like a whole new car. I got mine from Chris.

Yep, those are the ones I'm getting. I can't imagine why I don't see more of them. Are they particularly expensive?

Chris says that Moss is having a sale, so get hold of Chris and see what he can offer. But since you live on the east coast it might be better to find someone on that side of the country, shipping might take all the savings away.

The guy that needs the wheels is at the top of this thread, Davie McCloy.

I'm in Oregon.
