Folks, I am contemplating getting an AM wireless like this one
for my 73b
<http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=34206&item=2420465245>
and relocate the existing expensive-looking Sony set inside the glove box.
What do you think?
TIA
Charles

Charles, this gets down to how you use your car, i.e. is it a daily driver or more on the "show" side. The originality with the is very nice, but from a practical standpoint, these BL radios are prehistoric and thus are painful to listen to. Leaning over to tune the Sony on the right could get old. My money is on a decent receiver in the console, but that's just me!
Best of luck in mulling this one over.
Being modified at a show will do only one of two things. Put your car in the modified/competition class, when they have one, or knock off a couple of points because it's modified. My Bea has knocked the socks of some damn nice original cars, Rods & Customs, and trailer queens and she's modified a bunch. She hasn't seen a trailer since I hauled har home in boxes nearly 11 years ago.
So does my Panasonic!! What do I use it for??? I can reach everything!!
Me too, but I seldom do. Gary you heard my car, wouldn't you rather listen to something like that than a damned radio? I should have taken you under that wide I-270 overpass on the way to the show. I swear, she sounds just like a Jag with an Abarth exhaust going under that accelerating in 2nd. Beats me how she produces that 6-banger note under there, but she does, and that's the only place I've found where she'll do it.
Too bad you didn't see mine!!! It sounds good too!! I love that 'music'!!! Alida packed a bunch of CD's for me and I never listened to one!!! :o) Oh, don't tell her!!
You should see Gary's system though. He has a blanking plate that covers the radio, uses one stock speaker, and has one built into the battery box cover. Sorry Gary if I spilled the beans.
It sounds reeeaaal goood!! Oh, it is not the stock speaker, just the stock speaker location!!!!
Gary, can you share some details of the speaker installation in the battery box? Somewhere down the road, I was thinking of the same sort of thing. Maybe just a very mild sub in there to round out the sound, not, I repeat not the loud boom sound of the young set but just enough to hear the full sound.
Thanks Gary. I was thinking of using a plastic battery box liner and then somehow modifying an extra battery cover so that the battery side could still be accessed without having to remove the complete cover. Carpet might be a little tricky, but I am in the commercial flooring business and can get as much carpet as I need for trial and error. I also have access to binding companies for sewing edges, so I will keep the original carpet if I ever need to return it to stock.
Thanks for the inputs,
As you may have guessed, I will continue to use my Sony (it has no remote, but I can reach it) But I think a BL wireless set in the console looks better than a blank plate.
Furhtermore, an ancient looking AM set may not attract the attention of a would-be theif so much
(unless, he knows how much he can get, selling it to a MG purist)
Beside, my glove box insert already has a cut-out to the exact shape the Sony set (courtesy of the PO)
