MGB: Jack Stands ?

Ok. I am a newbie to the MG. I am planning on getting her up on jack stands today and start my fun. The last one I did was a 65 GMC pick up. I just put the stands under the frame. With the "B", I am not sure where to have them that will not cause damage to the car. The B will be left on the stand for about 6-8 months. Any suggestions would be a help.:(

Thanks

Mike

I put mine under the front frame rails about 3" back - jack the front from the middle of the front cross member. On the rear, the stands go under the axle as close to the wheels as possible - jack under the rear differential and be sure you don't crush the brake lines when you place the jack stands.

I usally just get the ones you can get on sale at various auto parts places 1/1/2 ton ones.
Then if I need more height than they give I have 4 peices of 8x8 tinber on hand to place them on first
Then I jack up each side and place a stand under the frame rail just behind the front wheel. I have to do the side first unless I remove my spoiler because my floor jack won't clear the spoiler
Then I Get the jack under diff and raise the back and put the stands just infront of the rear spring front eye then I'm done.
I usually put a piece of 2x4 between the stands and metal so as not to cause any scratches etc..
I placed the axle stands on wheel dollies last year so I could move the B around the shop but it felt a little shakey to me
So it's just the 8x8 's this year get the B nice and high to work on.
It's much easier on my back lol

I've got a few different brands and the ones I like best are from Harbor Freight, they generally have them on sale. I have the 6 ton, but I'm going to invest in the smaller ones they also carry.

I like the harbor freight 6 ton stands. Granted they are heavier than we need, but you can get them up pretty high and they are solid not a bit shakey.

Depends on the work to be done on the car. I prefer front stands under the wishbone on the front end if doing work under the middle of the car. On the frame rail if front end work is being done.

Make sure the head of the jack stands is wide. Some of the smaller ones have a narrow head. I have about 5 sets of two jack stands and my favorite are the aluminum 3 ton ones from HF.

I found a nice 3-ton jack & axle stand set at Sears awhile back. Never got around to using them until last month! I forget what they cost, but it wasn't over $100.

What's you life worth? Anything under 3 ton isn't an option for me. If you'd ever see one of those tin 1 1/2 ton stands collapse you'd understand.

Be SURE you know where the stand is at max height tho. I was standing next to a car up as high as the stands (6 ton) would go. When putting it up they lifted the adjustable part completely out of the jackstand and then set it back in to get the extra 1 to 1 1/2 inch height. We were leaning up against the car talking when it fell through the jackstands! A few people with ash white faces and recently sloppy drawers were awful glad they weren't under it.

Location is as everyone said above. But stands are nothing to mess with. I won't use the cast ones with the ratchets that hold them in place. I saw a tooth break on one once with an MGB on them and a guy underneath. Fortunately the other 3 unbroken stands held the car and he wasn't injured. I only use the kind with a pin that goes through the stand. My favorites have a U-shaped pin that goes through 2 holes. They're more expensive but I'm always reminded of the old Bell Helments ad that said, "If you have a ten dollar head, buy a ten dollar helmet." Substitute in "jack stand" for "helmet." Basil
