Can I put my hydraulic jack in the center of the rear axle, under the differential, to lift the back of the car?
Until now I never did it, I was too afraid to strain the tubes. I have a 79B that I bought in San Antonio Texas and imported in Montreal Canada.

I do with my BGT, but others may disagree.

Do you use some kind of pad? Is the axle flexing at all?

I use no pad and haven't noticed any flexing. The car has been on the road for a year with many trips up and down on the floorjack with no ill effects (leaking seals, bent axle shafts, housings, etc). There are no other options here as the jackpoints are ripped off.

Thanks, I will try it.
I will soon remove the engine/trans from the car for a rebuild and I have read that it helps to raise the back of the car. Of course I will use jack stands!
Can I put the stands on the axle tubes?

Twists recomended jacking points.
front cross member(never the engine's sump)
center of the diferential, on T types use a piece of wood with hole to accept drain plug
under the center of each leaf spring
under the spring pan at the front corners.

Far be it from me to argue with such a luminary, but yes, I do put jackstands under the axle tubes, close to the leaf springs.

You're ok Oli. You can jack at all the points the guys mentioned and put stands anywhere they sit securely under the rear axle. When putting stands under the front A-arms let the jack down slowly and tap the bottoms of the stands outward with a hammer every little bit untill they support the weight and sit squairly on the floor. I usually support the front with the stands under the frame rails an inch or two back from where they level out.

Welcome to the club.
