Random question. Do you prefer the lead or rawhide/copper hammer for knockoffs? Mine looks like a good weapon for a slasher movie.

Sorry. My lead hammer looks like a good weapon for a slasher movie.
I've never had lead, always went with copper.
My favorites were Thor Brand hammers. Great for tossing/twiroling too!
Copper/rawhide works the best i think. Never used lead. I found that by putting a piece of 2x4 against the knock-off and hitting that with the hammer does little to no damage to the knock off. Worked well on my old Healey and my Lotus.
I have both, but like the lead better. You can always reshape it by melting down some lead sinkers and add to the hammer.
A source of cheap lead should be tire shops. They can't write off used wheel weights as an expense or charge them out on a ballance job. Many of them have buckets full of used weights that are nearly worthless because they don't bring "Clean lead" prices at recyclers. Scrap lead is so cheap now that I see loads of old batteries around shops I call on. Many of them get turned in for a $2.00 core charge, when they brought 2 or 3 bucks at recyclers people would steal them, but at 50 to 75 cents each nobody bothers.
Good idea, hadn't thought of balance weights. It would be a shame to melt down a perfectly good fishing sinker.
Thanks gents. Appreciate the input!
