I'm not sure how to answer this one,so I'll cover all bases.A long story but I'll try to cut it down.
I originally bought a 72 as a resto but it turned out to be too much as the rear had been welded up in such a poor way it would never drive straight,a freind of mine said you bought a bit of a challenge there(remember that bit),so I heard of a reasonable 77 for sale thinking all the 72 parts would come in usefull but TBH most of them don't fit anyway so lots of hard work went down the drain on that one.
What I was after is a good classic car to go trips on with my wife, now the kids are getting older we hope for some time to ourselves on MG runs, weekends away etc.The car was never meant to be shown but my daughter is insisting I do or she will(hmm scary). So I don't intend to keep it original,I don't need to but I do want a nice reliable car and I like chrome bumpers so all that got moved from the 72.
Another thing cropped up at the begining of the resto,I have a freind that works in a childrens hospice,I play santa for them at christmas and volunteer where I can but they look for people to do challenges for them,we came up with an idea for the chellenge or my mate did accidentally when he said "bit of a challenge that" so we set about trying to use the car to raise funds. Now at this point I should tell you we never got enough sponsership to continue but the idea was to drive the car from the arctic to africa, one extreme to the other because I love the idea of driving endurance. The route was from the tip of finland just inside the arctic circle to Morrocco just inside Africa,it was all planned,we had a ex army guy who had done most of the route,a proper mechanic, myself and one other driver. We even had offers from magazines to cover the resto and the route with us but sadly due to the economic climate or thats what most said we couldn't get enough funds together,it wasn't for car costs that was down to us but we needed things like a second vehicle 4x4 and loads of other bits.Yet again a lot of hard work.
so why do I mention the challenge?,well its not cancelled just shelved until better times so the car as well as a weekend holiday driver is going to earn its keep with a couple of challenges in the future.the 77 is now near completion the new interior is going in this week I'll put new pictures up when its done.
I hope this covers it all
