Just got the cylinder head back from the machine shop today (again, thanks David). Whilst putting the rocker arm back on and finger tightening the head nuts, I noticed that it looked like #8 and #6 valve were being depressed at the same time. This doesn't follow the old rule of 9's, nor is it even a multiple!
At the same time, I remember some of the lifters coming partially out when I pulled off the old head. I did open up the side covers and made sure they were in their little holes.
Should these lifters seat themselves as I torque down the head, or is there something I should do first?

You are OK!! The rule of 9's is for when they are right on the bottom!! You do not adjust the valves 2 at a time!! I'm sure that you are fine!! Carry on!!

Trent, it's OK. #8 is an exhaust valve, #6 is an intake. Not a problem!!

DOH!

Sometimes I kind of get ahead of myself.

For instance, I got a new speedometer cable the other day. I hook the one end up to the speedo, and the other to my drill (just to check). Turn the drill on, nothing. Hum, maybe it's the speedo itself. Pull it out of the dash, use remaining nub from old cable, turn on drill, nothing. Hummmm. Take angle drive off. Looks good. Maybe I'm not turning it fast enough! Hook nub up to Dremel, then to speedo. Turn on Dremel. Needle is bouncing, but not in any kind of reliable way. Double Hummm! It then occurs to me, maybe the drill should be turning the other direction? Sure enough, cable and Speedo work great!

Trent,
Stay the hell out of my screw up territory!! ;-) Totally sounds like something I would do. That's OK. We're getting smarter on a very steep curve.
