MGB: Listen to what your car is telling you.

The past couple of days the stereo in my GT has started to cut out intermittently, but only for a second or so at a time. At first I thought it was a bad speaker wire grounding out, but I checked those and could find nothing. Then the next time the stereo cut out I was able to glance at it before it came back on and saw the stereo itself seemed to be without power, so I checked the power and ground wires to it but could find nothing wrong.

Coming to work this morning I finally noticed that when the stereo cut out I also got a missfire, I hadn't noticed that before because it rained just about all last week and I had my loud heater fan running so couldn't hear the engine plus it had only done it when the car was moving, this morning I was at a light and it was idling. Once I realized that the first thing I did was start to mess with the ignition key - wiggling the key reproduces the symptoms.

So - stereo cutting out = possible dying ignition switch.

I'll change it this week before it leaves me stranded.

Nice. At least it was kind enough to give you some advance warning. Well-trained beastie....

I treat it well and buy it lots of presents, it's nice to me in return. :)

I have to mess with the key to get my radio to work, I have never had a misfire though. How hard is it to change the ignition switch out?
Thanks
Tom

Not too hard. The repro stuff is shite though.

I bought a switch for the 79 a little over a year ago, it seemed to be pretty good quality.

check the tension on the alt belt, it may be slipping under a load, headlights, road lights etc. The drag can cause that symptom.

LOL! That's a cool quote. Google Language Tools is usually pretty good for automatic translation, but it really blew it on that one!
