Well, I'm known to write ostentaciously long forum posts...so I'll try and keep this one short. and... I tried my darndest to resize these photos so they weren't D/U Killers. Hope I did it. :/

I was on my way home in my Avalon(that I recently had serviced at the dealership so it wouldn't slam me into another car at 100mph or whatever...) and as I passed by this paint and body shop, I noticed a car in its lot that just looked too...good! I only caught a glimpse for a second, but I swung the car around and pulled in ...as I got out and walked through the maze of cars, I found it was not what I had anticipated (an early MG or other British make) ...well, it was British at least. There sat a little Sunbeam Tiger...and I shrugged my shoulders, took a picture, and walked away. Mind you, it was a sharp looking little car. Wouldn't mind taking it for a spin...but it wasn't the 'B that I was expecting/wanting. Anyway ;) not the point.

THEN! On my way back to my car, I saw out of the corner of my eye sat this rusted out beautyy! I realized I was looking at the first GT I had ever seen in person! I was so amazed that I ran over to the guy staring at me while waxing cars...and knowing that he was watching, I politely asked if I could take a few pictures and be on my way. ...he didn't care, so I went ahead. It was pretty cool. But, I mean, definitely a sad looking car, with no MG emblem/symbol on it anywhere to attest to its true heritage, but it had a EU tag(I presume) on the back and another white EU style tag sitting on the dash(not visible).
..but being a good ambassador to MG's, I gave my name, phone number and email address to the man waxing cars and told him to have the owner contact me!

Let me tell you something. ...it is not a pretty sight, what has happened to this cars hood(or anything else for that matter) ...but it's there and it made my day! So, uhm, enjoy the pictures?

Anyone care to guess(or tell me) the year of manufacture? :)

Sunbeam poser...

GT

Cheers! - Scott

That's an interesting interior, maybe the PO used to work for Chris Craft. ;)

Hahah, I heard similar remarks from others today when I showed them the photos...good stuff. I'd just love to see what else the PO did to this car.

Hey, someone was asking about those rear-window louvers just the other day. Quite the spoiler too. Someone should grab it just for those bits and the wheels.

That is some serious wood-work in there.

That hood makes me uncomfortable. Ugh. A bit too much wood for my taste. I like the Sunbeam, though.

Jumping Jehosophat I want that dash.............B's and aeroplanes have an untold magnetism

Yip,it was me Simon,I love those louvers.

Chris I was going to say PO must have been a Pilot, but a pilot beat me to it:D

You could make some good money off of one of us saps (like me) if you went back and got those rear window louvers. Put 'em in the trader section.

That GT is a 1970 model year. It sported the year specific split rear bumper and was the year MG introduced the 'fish mouth' recessed grill. The rear spoiler and hatch glass louvres were both owner added options and are sought after by many owners and the wheels appear to be from a Datsun Z car (perhaps). The interior has obviously been highly modified as has been stated and is a bit of an indication of what may or may not be hiding under the bonnet. It would be interesting to hunt down the owner and inquire at what cost it could be purchased for.

FWIW, that red Sunbeam is no poser. If you don't know about them and their racing and rallying heritage, check em out. Fine cars...

Based on the single small tail pipe and the wire wheels I'd guess that the Sunbeam is an Alpine and not a Tiger.

The Alpine is a sweet car, not as common as a 'b.

I didn't think MG floors were very good at holding water and floating.....

I would take the whole rear hatch. I am digging the spoiler, louvers and the wheels. Was the car for sale?

Interesting GT, but the hood does make you think serious problems lie below.....

The wheels are tasty!

wonder what the shipping would be for the louver from Niceville, USA..... :)

Very cool stuff guys. I'll be anxiously awaiting an email or phone call from the owner :) ....maybe he'll just want someone to tow it??? hey! I can dream, right?

Yes,that is an Alpine - look at the script on the front fender.
I wonder if the GT is savable? Of course, the price would have to be cheap.

Or Home Depot had a sale on plywood.....

If that car has been in your area for years (assuming that's Niceville, FL), the front of the bonnet probably got scratched up - and the salt air did the rest....likely with a lot more rust you haven't seen yet....

The Alpine's top is much easier to erect than the MGB. My neighbor owns a 65 Tiger and they are a nice car, better finished than the MG, also cost more when new.

The tag looks like it might be Dutch, could be an import (that would also explain the louvers and spoiler), and the wheels are aftermarket, I've seen them on various cars and trucks in the late '70s and early '80s.

Are you saying the Dutch are a tacky group as a whole?? :D

Mar 17, 2010 18:02:36

No, just that I've seen the yellow tags on Dutch vehicles when I was in Germany.

It seems that louvers, spoilers and such are easier to come by in Europe as well.
