MGB: Mark 1 3 point seat belts

I'd like to consider replacing my 2 point seat belts with 3 point static belts.

My car is a 1966. I have heard and read about the two acorn nuts on the wheel arches, but my car has no such thing that I can see. Did the 1966 cars have such mounting plates in place?

I've read through all the past posts, but could not find any good recommendations on mounting the shoulder belt. ( Most of the pictures and files on this subject are no longer on the server.)

Any experience with the Moss aircraft style 3 point static belts?

My '63 had the chrome plated acorn nuts on studs. I made plates to accept the shoulder belt. Dig around in your carpet down low on the inner fender, near the battery cover. Maybe the nuts were removed but the studs are still there.

You should have a mount point on the wheel arch, not at the top, but down at the side. It's big and reinforced; you can't miss it. Top-mount belts, for GTs at least, came with the Mk2's, and had belts with the elongated chrome plate and the "push" tabs. I have no experience with the Moss aftermarket belts - the ones on my MGA are restored (re-webbed) Kangol belts, as are the ones I'm going to put in the '67 GT.

The vintage belts?? My catalog is packed right now so I cant give you a part number, but what I used in the 73 I don't like. Everytime Jane gets in or out, I have to pull her belt tight after she has buckled in. She of course has little faith in the belts' ability to save her. I would go with their retractable 3-point belt.

I used the old aircraft style lap belt hardware that was in the car when I bought it, but instead of stopping the webbing at the male part, looped through and over the shoulder back to the fender well bracket. It's all new webbing, and no sewing (and the consequential liability) was necessary as the hardware allowed the ends to go through, then to adjusters. Just had to heat the ends of the webbing after cutting.

I do the same thing for my wife, Chris.

So you think that it is fine that way Rod?

She only rides in the car a few times a year, so it's pretty minor. I just snug hers when I snug mine.

Hmmmm. I have to do it in the GT too, which had Kangols.

Ok, it's not great, just OK...

Dan: This picture shows the studs to which the acorn nuts attach. Too bad I do not know how to highlight them, but they are just outboard of the filler holes for the rear shocks.

Although my wheel arches are now covered in carpet, I clearly have no studs protruding. I would definately feel them thru the carpet.

Looking inside the wheel wells from below, there is a round metal reinforcement welded onto the wheel well at about this same location as your studs on each side of the car. Is this round metal reinforcement part of the structure for this shoulder strap attachment point? Maybe my studs were cut off?

Lest you laugh at the protection afforded by the Kangol magnetic belt fasteners, I had the misfortune of being hit while pulling into a cruise night in the MGB by some goofballs who ran a stop sign. The "vintage belts" from a '72 (without retractors) on my '73 worked as designed.

I will explain that this is natural. Fortunately I'm exempt from wearing belts so she doesn't have to do mine.
