Back in 1971 I was an assistant manager at a grocery store. I drove a new 1971 MGB and the produce manager had a new 390 Ford Fairlane fast back. He always wanted to bet me $100 he could beat my B in a one block drag. All I ever said was “when it is time, the MG’s day will come”.
Yesterday at the mall I met him. Hadn't seen him for 35 years. He is in town to visit some friends. We went for lunch to catch up and get in some car talk. After lunch I asked him if he still had that $100 and wanted to race his Ford. All he said was “go get your B and you are on”. We walked to the parking lot and I pointed to the B. He had to pick his jaw up off the sidewalk. The look on his face was priceless!!!
He is still as tight with a buck as before. Wouldn't cough up the $100 I figure he owed me by default. His car was long gone to the rust junk yard so he couldn't race. LOL

Thats awesome! Is your 71 B today the same car you had back then?
Todays B is the same year. Differant colour and 500 cars newer. He didn't know tho.
My brother in Columbia used to have a red 64 390 fastback - it was a pretty good car. Now and then, I see one just like it driving around up here.
My Dad had a '65 Country Squire wagon with the 390, 4-bbl, dual exhaust and Posi Trac. I drove it quite a bit when I first got my license. That thing was NOT fit for a 16-year-old, but the kids didn't make fun of it for long, after they tried to run it!!! Then they noticed how handy it was at the drive-in, too. I'm still wondering how it was that the first car I bought for myself was a '66 MGB!?!
